Africa must not become ‘geostrategic battleground’ warns AU

ADDIS ABABA, May 26 (NNN-NEWVISION) — Africa must not become a “geostrategic battleground” for global powers, as the continent grapples with several threats to its peace and security, African Union leaders warned on Thursday.

They were speaking at an event to mark the anniversary of the creation of the AU’s precursor, the Organisation of African Unity, on May 25, 1963.

High-level seminar calls for new heights in China-Africa ties

ADDIS ABABA, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Experts and policymakers attending a high-level seminar on China-Africa cooperation on Thursday called for fostering new highlights in China-Africa ties under the umbrella of the African Union (AU).

The seminar, held in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, gathered AU Commission (AUC) officials, African diplomats, diplomats from the Chinese Mission to the AU, academia and experts, among others.

UN appeals for urgent funding to support conflict, drought-affected people in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, April 4 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has appealed for urgent funding to respond to growing humanitarian calamities in drought and conflict-affected parts of Ethiopia.

The UN body, in its latest situation update on Ethiopia issued late Monday, said an estimated 714 million U.S. dollars has so far been contributed toward the 2023 Ethiopian Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP-2023), corresponding to 18 percent of the HRP requirements.

AU Commission lauds Chinese construction workers for success of China-aided Africa CDC project

ADDIS ABABA, April 1 (Xinhua) -- The African Union Commission (AUC) has presented letters of appreciation to Chinese construction workers in recognition of their "extraordinary and professional cooperation" in the construction of the China-aided Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) headquarters.

The AUC on Friday lauded members of the Chinese engineering, technical and logistic teams at a ceremony held inside the newly-built premises of the Africa CDC headquarters in the southern suburb of the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.

3.4 mln children in Ethiopia out of school due to conflict, climate shocks: UN

ADDIS ABABA, March 21 (Xinhua) -- More than 3.4 million children across Ethiopia do not have access to school, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) disclosed late Monday.

In an Ethiopia Situation Report, UNOCHA said more than 3.4 million children including 1.7 million girls do not have access to school due to the impact of conflict and climate shocks across the east African country.

US Secretary of State meets Ethiopia officials to repair ties

15 Mar 2023; MEMO: US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, on Wednesday met with Ethiopian Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen, and other officials in the capital, Addis Ababa, as both countries look to repair ties following war in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region, Anadolu News Agency reports.

"Probably the most important thing is to deepen the peace that has taken hold in the north," Blinken told journalists after the meeting.

Ethiopia: Chinese envoy refutes allegations of "debt trap" in Africa

ADDIS ABABA, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Xue Bing, Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Affairs of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Tuesday refuted the groundless cliche that China is creating a "debt trap" in Africa, calling it a narrative trap instead.

Addressing media here in the Ethiopian capital, the special envoy said Africa's debt burdens should not be blamed on China.

African Union to organise Libya reconciliation conference

21 Feb 2023; MEMO: The African Union is organising a national reconciliation conference for Libya, AU Commission Chief, Moussa Faki Mahamat, told AFP.

According to a report published by AFP, the meeting will be chaired by the African Union's point man on Libya, Republic of Congo President, Denis Sassou Nguesso, Faki said.
