Egyptian, French leaders discuss regional issues

CAIRO, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron discussed on Friday the developments of several regional issues, including the situation in Libya.

During a phone conversation, both presidents exchanged views over a number of issues of common interests, Egyptian Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said in a statement.

Egypt stops issuing licences for Syrian shops

10 Sep 2020; MEMO: Egyptian authorities have demanded that no more licences for shops owned by Syrians be issued following direct orders from General Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reports seeing an internal circular sent to governors and deputies by Local Development Minister Mahmoud Sharawi, stipulating they must have direct approval from the Interior Ministry to issue commercial licences to Syrians and be provided with a statement listing “the names of the Syrians”.

Arab FMs Reach “No Consensus” On Palestinian Draft For Peace With Israel: AL Official

CAIRO/RAMALLAH, Sept 10 (NNN-MENA) – Arab foreign ministers have not reached a consensus on a draft presented by Palestine, over the peace process with Israel, an Arab League (AL) official said.

Hossam Zaki, AL’s assistant secretary-general, made the remarks, after the 154th session of the AL Council, at the level of foreign ministers, which kicked off via a video conference under Palestine’s presidency.

Zaki said that “the discussions regarding the Israel-United Arab Emirates (UAE) deal were serious, comprehensive and took much time.”

Egypt signs protocol to teach Chinese in schools

08 Sep 2020; MEMO: Egypt and China signed a cooperation protocol yesterday to teach the Chinese language as a second optional foreign language in pre-university schools in the North African country. The agreement was signed in Cairo by Egyptian Minister of Education and Technical Education, Tarek Shawki, and the Chinese Ambassador to Egypt, Liao Liqiang.

Psychiatrist dies in Egypt’s Scorpion Prison after arrest in reprisal for journalist brother

07 Sep 2020; MEMO: A psychiatrist has died in Egypt’s Scorpion Prison after repeated requests for urgent medical care were ignored.

Amr Ali Abu Khalil had a heart attack and repeatedly called on authorities to allow medicine in or that he be admitted to the prison hospital for treatment.

Egypt, Bahrain Welcome Peace Initiatives To Solve Palestinian-Israeli Conflict

CAIRO, Sept 6 (NNN-MENA) – Egypt and Bahrain welcomed any initiatives, aimed at achieving a comprehensive and just peace for the Palestinian cause, based on the references of international legitimacy.

The remarks came in a joint statement released after a meeting in Cairo between Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry and his Bahraini counterpart, Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani.

During the meeting, both ministers affirmed the need to preserve the principle of the two-state solution, according to the statement.

Egyptian President, top EU diplomat discuss regional issues in Cairo

CAIRO, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi met on Thursday with visiting EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell to discuss regional issues including the Libyan crisis, the Palestinian issue and Ethiopia's dam built on the Nile River, said the Egyptian Presidency.

Egypt borrows $2bn ‘to finance state budget’

01 Sep 2020; MEMO: Egypt has signed its first $2 billion conventional and Islamic financing loan to support the local economy, the Egyptian Ministry of Finance announced yesterday.

In an official statement, the ministry said that the loan aimed at “financing the state’s general budget and supporting the Egyptian economy, to contribute to maintain its strong path in the face of prevailing fluctuations in global markets.”

Egypt: Acting leader of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood arrested in Cairo

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian authorities said on Friday they had arrested the acting leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mahmoud Ezzat, during a raid on an apartment in Cairo.

The arrest is the latest blow to Egypt’s oldest and most organised Islamist movement, which has been crushed in a sweeping crackdown since it was forced from power seven years ago.

Ezzat was an influential former deputy to Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie, and was seen as a hardliner within the group. He became acting leader after Badie’s arrest in August 2013.
