South Africa’s ruthlessly efficient fight against corona virus

PRETORIA, April 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — One week into South Africa’s nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus, and it is tempting – dangerously tempting – to breathe a sigh of relief.

After all, look at how much has already been achieved. More than 47,000 people have been tested, and 67 mobile testing units have been organised.

There are even drive-through testing centres. Soon the country will be able to test 30,000 people every day. To date, only five deaths from the virus have been confirmed. About 1,400 have tested positive for Covid-19.

BERLIN/WASHINGTON, April 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The US has been accused of redirecting 200,000 Germany-bound masks for its own use, in a move condemned as “modern piracy”.

The local government in Berlin said the shipment of US-made masks was “confiscated” in Bangkok.

The FFP2 masks, which were ordered by Berlin’s police force, did not reach their destination, it said.

Andreas Geisel, Berlin’s interior minister, said the masks were presumably diverted to the US.

The White House may advise those in virus hotspots to wear face coverings in public to help stem the spread.

The US now has 245,658 Covid-19 cases.

India: Residents demand roadside garbage removal daily

KANPUR: Though roads are not humming with people or vehicles, insanitary conditions are prevailing all over. These situations are intolerable to the people.

When morning hours are enabling the very movement on the road, it appears that only residents are responsible to observe the cleanliness and civic body does not care.

The garbage thrown at one side of the road remains uncleaned till after 9 a.m. The flies hover on the wet garbage which can never be good for anyone.
