India: Man arrested in Reasi district rape case

Jammu, Nov 9 (PTI) A man was arrested on Friday for allegedly raping a woman six months ago in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district, officials said.

The police conducted a raid in Gran Goswan village of Reasi district and arrested Prem Singh, the accused, they said.

The accused was absconding for the last six months, they said. A case was registered against Singh.

Untimely snowfall damages apple crop in Kashmir

Srinagar, Nov 4 (PTI) Apple crop worth crores of rupees have been damaged in Kashmir due to early snowfall, officials said Sunday.

Political leaders have extended support to the farmers and asked the state government to take up assessment of losses and compensation for the ryots.

A large number of fruit-laden apple trees in Kashmir have either been uprooted or their stems have broken due to heavy snowfall on Saturday, an horticulture department official said.

Mentally disabled man shot dead by Army sentry in J-K

Srinagar, Nov 3 (PTI) A mentally disabled man was allegedly shot dead by an Army sentry in the early hours of Saturday when he ignored his warnings and walked towards an Army camp in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

A security guard at the Army camp shot at Rayees Ahmad Wani at 3 am, they said.

Police said they have taken cognisance of the killing and a probe into the matter is underway.

Army and defence officials said they were ascertaining the circumstances which led to Wani's death.

Heavy snowfall in Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand

Srinagar/Shimla/Dehradun, Nov 3 (PTI) Heavy rain and snowfall lashed Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and parts of Uttarakhand on Saturday due to Western Disturbance, bringing down the mercury in the hill states.

Surface and air links between the Kashmir Valley and rest of the country were snapped while Srinagar witnessed snowfall in November for the first time since 2009.

India: Six Kashmiris killed by Indian security forces

Srinagar, Oct 25 (PTI) Six militants were Thursday killed in two gun battles with security forces in Baramulla and Anantnag districts of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

"Four militants were killed in Arwani operation in Anantnag district while two ultras were eliminated in an encounter at Kreeri in Baramulla," a senior police official said.

Centre's disproportionate force contributing to violence in Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 25; GANASHAKTI:  CPI(M) MLA from Jammu and Kashmir M Y Tarigami on Thursday accused the Centre of contributing to the cycle of violence in the state with its use of disproportionate force to quell unrest.

He said the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre is making the situation in the state worse by subduing people's political aspirations instead of holding a credible dialogue.

Two Kashmiris killed by Indian security forces in Baramulla in J-K

Srinagar, Oct 25 (PTI) Two militants were killed Thursday in a gunbattle with security forces in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Kreeri area in the early hours following information about presence of militants there. Militants opened fire towards security forces, and two ultras were killed in the ensuing gunbattle, a police official said.

"The encounter at Kreeri in Baramulla is over. Two militants have been killed," the official said.

India: Autonomy only way out of J&K tangle: Omar

Srinagar, Oct 24 (PTI) National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah Wednesday said granting autonomy is the only "pragmatic solution" to the decades-old problem of Jammu and Kashmir.

It is high time for the Government of India to implement the resolution of autonomy (passed by state legislative assembly in 2000).

2 kashmiris killed by Indian security forces

Srinagar, Oct 24 (PTI) Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants, including an reportedly M.Phil degree holder, were killed in an encounter with security forces in Nowgam area of the city on Wednesday.

The slain militants have been identified as Sabzar Ahmad Sofi and Asif Ahmad, an official said.

According to media reports, Sofi was pursuing PhD in Botany from Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi, and had joined the militant ranks in the aftermath of killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in July 2016.

BJP eyeing 50 plus seats in J&K assembly polls

Jammu, Oct 21 (PTI) Buoyed by the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) election results in Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP said Sunday it is hopeful to win over 50 assembly seats in the next elections and form a government on its own in the state.

The BJP swept the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) elections and made some advances in Kashmir, by winning 100 wards in the Valley, in the four-phased ULB elections in the state that were marred by boycott by the NC and PDP.
