India PM visits site of bridge collapse as families mourn

MORBI, India (AP) — India’s prime minister on Tuesday visited the site in western India where a newly repaired 143-year-old suspension bridge collapsed into a river, sending hundreds plunging into the water and killing at least 135 in one of the country’s worst accidents in years.

Narendra Modi inspected the collapsed bridge in Morbi town in Gujarat state and talked to rescuers. He also visited injured people at a hospital. Security was tight as police and paramilitary soldiers blanketed the area.

Indian capital records 1,238 dengue cases in October

NEW DELHI, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Indian capital region Delhi recorded 1,238 dengue fever cases from Oct. 1 to 26, local media reported Monday citing a report issued by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

The dengue cases logged in October in the capital region were more than half of the total number of dengue cases recorded this year and the figure has brought the infection tally of the vector-borne disease to 2,175.

Russia recruiting U.S.-trained Afghan commandos, vets say

(AP) --- Afghan special forces soldiers who fought alongside American troops and then fled to Iran after the chaotic U.S. withdrawal last year are now being recruited by the Russian military to fight in Ukraine, three former Afghan generals told The Associated Press.

They said the Russians want to attract thousands of the former elite Afghan commandos into a “foreign legion” with offers of steady, $1,500-a-month payments and promises of safe havens for themselves and their families so they can avoid deportation home to what many assume would be death at the hands of the Taliban.

Suspension bridge collapse kills at least 133 in India

MORBI, India (AP) — Military teams were searching Monday for people missing after a 143-year-old suspension bridge collapsed into a river Sunday in the western Indian state of Gujarat, sending hundreds plunging into the water and killing at least 133 in one of the country’s worst accidents in years.

As families mourned the dead, attention was turning to why the bridge, built by the British in the late 1800s and touted as an “engineering marvel,” collapsed and who might be responsible.

India: Pregnant woman was found murdered in Kanpur area

Kanpur: A six-month pregnant woman was found murdered on Sunday afternoon. The woman's body was found in a bloodied condition in a cot inside a mosquito net.

When the woman's husband reached home with the daughter, he was surprised to see the dead body of the wife.

Police and forensic team reached the site & inspected the spot. The body of the woman was sent for post-mortem.

India: Three die from inhaling toxic gas of unused septic tank

Kanpur: Three people, including a minor, died after inhaling toxic fumes, police said here on Monday.

They were removing the shuttering of an unused septic tank when the accident appeared.

According to news, the incident took place on Sunday evening. The police added that the deceased were identified as Nandu, 18, his elder brother Mohit, 24, and their neighbour Sahil, 16, all residents of Chaubepur area here.

At least 60 killed in India bridge collapse

AHMEDABAD, India, Oct 30 (Reuters) - At least 60 people were killed when a pedestrian bridge over a river in the western Indian state of Gujarat collapsed, plunging hundreds of people into the water, officials said.

Authorities said more than 150 people were on the suspension bridge over the Machhu River in the town of Morbi at the time of the collapse.

India: Money laundering case: Court sends Chhattisgarh businessman to 12-day ED custody

Raipur, Oct 29 (PTI) A special court Chhattisgarh's Raipur district on Saturday sent to the Enforcement Directorate’s custody businessman Suryakant Tiwari, a prime suspect in a money laundering case linked to the alleged extortion of money from mining transporters.

Three other alleged accused, including an IAS officer, arrested in the case are already in judicial custody.

India: Telangana HC orders BJP people accused in MLAs poaching case to surrender

Hyderabad, Oct 29 (PTI) The Telangana High Court on Saturday set aside a lower court's order and directed that the accused in the alleged poaching of TRS MLAs to surrender before police.

Meanwhile, another judge of the High Court, on a petition by BJP seeking a CBI probe, posted the matter for November 4 and deferred investigation till then.

Imran Khan again targets Pakistan's establishment on Day 2 of protest march; govt rules out talks over snap polls

Islamabad, Oct 29 (PTI) Imran Khan on Saturday again targeted the powerful establishment, saying the people of Pakistan should not be treated like “goats and sheep”, even as the coalition government ruled out any negotiations with the former prime minister on holding snap elections.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief addressed the participants of his long march on the Day 2 of his protest rally at Shahdara area of Lahore before leading them to Islamabad in a convoy of vehicles.
