Twitter transfers India head Manish Maheshwari to US

New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) Twitter has transferred to the US its India head Manish Maheshwari, against whom an FIR was registered in Uttar Pradesh in connection with a probe related to a video of an alleged hate crime.

While the company did not specify any reason for the change, it said Maheshwari will move to the US as Senior Director (Revenue Strategy and Operations) and focus on new markets in the latest role.

Twitter Vice President Japan and Asia Pacific Yu Sasamoto shared the development in a tweet.

New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) Twitter Saturday restored the account of Rahul Gandhi, alongside those of the Congress and its other leaders, amid ongoing friction between the social media platform and the party over its members sharing pictures of the family of an alleged rape victim.

"Satyameva Jayate (truth alone triumphs)", the Congress tweeted in its first reaction after its official handle was unlocked.

New Delhi, Aug 12 (PTI) RTI activist Saket Gokhale Thursday joined the Trinamool Congress in New Delhi.

He said the Mamata Banerjee-led party takes an "aggressive" stand on issues.

"The TMC is the second largest Opposition party in Parliament and it has been my obvious choice. If you look at all the national parties, the TMC takes an aggressive stand. The way the chief minister of Bengal has been fighting on the front foot, that's what I'm looking for," Gokhale said after joining the party.

India: SC seeks action taken by Centre on recommendations of National Task Force on Oxygen

New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI) The Supreme Court Monday asked the Centre to submit within two weeks the action taken report (ATR) on implementing the suggestions of of the court-appointed National Task Force (NTF) on allocation of oxygen to states and Union Territories amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The top court said that since the NTF consists of senior doctors and experts from all over the country, it is imperative for the Centre to take steps to ensure that its recommendations are duly implemented at the policy level to meet any exigencies in present and foreseeable future.

New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) Noting that financial support in old age is a necessity, NGOs for elderly have said that with an increasingly longer life span, income generation through a second job and gainful engagement post-retirement has become the need of the hour.

Reacting to a recent report titled 'Quality of Life for Elderly Index', prepared by the Institute for Competitiveness, the NGOs welcomed the focus on the 'quality of life of the elderly' looking at major aspects like financial and social wellbeing.

India: 'Go out only when necessary, inform security': Delhi court to Unnao rape survivor

New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI) A Delhi court on Monday directed the Unnao rape survivor, who has been provided security by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), to step out only when necessary until the case is over and inform her personal security officers before going out.

District and Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma issued the directions on an application filed by the rape survivor in which she alleged harassment by the personal security officers.

India: SC notice to Centre, others on plea seeking disclosure of data on Covid vaccine clinical trials

New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Monday sought responses from the Centre and others on a plea seeking directions for disclosure of data regarding clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccines.

A bench of justices L Nageswara Rao and Aniruddha Bose issued notice on the plea, and asked the Centre and others to respond to it within four weeks.

India: Rs 49,000 crore foreign funding to NGOs in 3 yrs

New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) Over Rs 49,000 crore in foreign funds were received by more than 18,000 NGOs in the country in the last three years, Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said Rs 16,940.58 crore were received by the NGOs in 2017-18, Rs 16,525.73 crore were received in 2018-19 and Rs 15,853.94 crore in 2019-20.

India: Why 'quiet' on caste census, Cong asks govt in RS

New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) The Congress asked the government on Wednesday why was it "quiet" and "running away" from a caste-based census, which was mooted by a woman MP of the ruling BJP in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday and even by the chief ministers of Bihar and Odisha.

A caste-based census is required to assess the exact ground situation because in at least 30 states and Union territories, the reservation for backward classes has crossed the upper limit, the opposition party said.

India evacuating staff from consulate in Afghanistan's Mazar-e-Sharif

New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI) India is evacuating its staff from its consulate in Afghanistan's Mazar-e-Sharif in view of the rapidly escalating violence by the Taliban around the capital city of Balkh province, people familiar with the development said on Tuesday.

The Indian-based staff of the consulate and a number of Indians residing in Mazar-e-Sharif are being evacuated due to the deteriorating security scenario in the city as well as areas around it, they said.
