Yahoo shuts down its news sites business in India

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) Yahoo has shut down its news websites in India due the new foreign direct investment (FDI) rules that limit foreign ownership of media companies that operate and publish digital content in India.

This includes Yahoo News, Yahoo Cricket, Finance, Entertainment and MAKERS India. This, however, will not affect users' Yahoo e-mail, and search experiences in India.

India: Farmers' national convention to mark 9 months of protest

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) The national convention by farmers to mark completion of nine months of their agitation against the three contentious farm laws began at the Singhu border on Thursday.

The two-day-event that will see participation from 1,500 delegates across organisations of farmers, women, youth, and labourers, is aimed at intensification and expansion of the ongoing movement against the Centre's farm laws.

India: SC asks HC to decide in 2 weeks plea against appointment of Rakesh Asthana as Delhi Police chief

New Delhi, Aug 25 (PTI) The Supreme Court Wednesday asked the Delhi High Court to decide within two weeks the plea pending before it challenging the appointment of senior IPS officer Rakesh Asthana as the Delhi Police Commissioner.

The 1984-batch IPS officer, who had shifted to Union cadre from Gujarat and was earlier serving as the director general of Border Security Force, was appointed Delhi Police Commissioner on July 27, four days before his superannuation on July 31.

He will have a tenure of one year as the police chief of the national capital.

India: All Afghans must travel to India on e-Visa: Govt

New Delhi, Aug 25 (PTI) The Union home ministry on Wednesday announced that all Afghan nationals henceforth must travel to India only on e-Visa in view of the prevailing situation in Afghanistan.

The decision comes days after the government introduced a new category of visa called "e-Emergency X-Misc visa" for the Afghan nationals after the Taliban captured power in that country.

India: Nizamuddin Markaz: HC directs police to hand over keys of residential portion

New Delhi, August 23 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Monday directed the city police to handover the keys of the residential portion of the Nizamuddin Markaz to its occupants after it was locked by the authorities in the wake of an FIR in connection with the Tablighi Jamaat congregation there last year.

India: Umar Khalid calls Delhi riots conspiracy case 'cooked up'

New Delhi, Aug 23 (PTI) Former JNU student leader Umar Khalid, arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the north-east Delhi riots conspiracy case, told a Delhi Court on Monday that there were various contradictions in the police's claims and called it a "cooked up" case.

Khalid, along with several others, has been booked under the stringent anti-terror law UAPA. They are accused of being the "masterminds" of the February 2020 violence, which had left 53 people dead and over 700 injured. He has sought bail in the case.

India: Govt calls all-party meeting on Afghanistan

New Delhi, Aug 23 (PTI) The government has called an all-party meeting on Thursday on the developments in Afghanistan.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will brief the floor leaders of political parties on the present situation in Afghanistan in the in-person meeting.

India: FM announces Rs 6 lakh cr asset monetisation pipeline

New Delhi, Aug 23 (PTI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday announced a Rs 6 lakh crore National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) that will look to unlock value in infrastructure assets across sectors ranging from power to road and railways.

She also said the asset monetisation does not involve selling of land and it is about monetising brownfield assets.

Projects have been identified across sectors, with roads, railways and power being the top segments.

India's first smog tower inaugurated in Delhi by Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi, Aug 23 (PTI) Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated the "country's first smog tower" at Connaught Place in Delhi on Monday and said it will prove to be a milestone and many such structures can be installed in the city if the pilot project yields results.

He also said that the concentration of PM2.5 has reduced from 150 micrograms per cubic metre to 100 g/m and that of PM10 has dipped from 300 g/m to 150 g/m in the national capital since 2014 due to the efforts made in the last few years.

India evacuates 168 people from Kabul

New Delhi, Aug 22 (PTI) India on Sunday evacuated 168 people including 107 Indians from Kabul in a military transport aircraft of the IAF amid the deteriorating security situation in the Afghan capital city following its takeover by the Taliban a week back.

Another group of 87 Indians and two Nepalese nationals who were flown in an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft to the Tajikistan capital of Dushanbe from Kabul on Saturday, arrived in Delhi on Sunday morning, people familiar with the development said.
