OTTAWA, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Canada continued to see a sharp rise of COVID-19 cases on Sunday, with the country's total caseload surpassing 330,000.

Canada reported a total of 330,503 cases of the COVID-19 and 11,455 deaths as of Sunday evening, according to CTV.

Canada added 5,000 news cases on Saturday, setting a new daily record.

Canada's Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam urged Canadians to make a plan for safer holidays on Sunday amid record spikes of COVID-19 across the country.

CANADA: Trudeau urges local gov'ts to do right thing to stem COVID-19 spread

OTTAWA, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called on local governments Tuesday to do the right thing to stem record-breaking spikes of new COVID-19 cases across the country.

"We're seeing record spikes this morning across the country. So I'm imploring the premiers and mayors to please do the right thing - act now to protect public health," Trudeau said at a press conference in Ottawa.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Canada reported a total of 272,512 cases of the COVID-19 and 10,629 deaths, according to CTV.

Canada updates COVID-19 guidance to include risk of aerosol transmission

OTTAWA, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said on Thursday that COVID-19 can be transmitted through small airborne droplets.

PHAC updated its virus transmission guidance on Tuesday, bringing them in line with the advice of the World Health Organization (WHO).

"SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, spreads from an infected person to others through respiratory droplets and aerosols created when an infected person coughs, sneezes, sings, shouts, or talks," the updated guidance said.

Government calls on Canadians to wear three-layer masks

OTTAWA, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Public Health Agency of Canada on Tuesday urged Canadians to wear face masks that are made of three layers including a filter.

At Tuesday's press conference in Ottawa, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam said that adding a filter layer to masks will provide Canadians with extra protection against COVID-19.

Police hunt for suspect dressed in medieval clothing after stabbings in Quebec City

Quebec City (Canada), Nov 1 (AP/PTI) Police in Quebec City are hunting for a man dressed in medieval clothing and armed with a bladed weapon who has left multiple victims.

Police said late Saturday that the attacks happened near the provincial legislature on Halloween.

Police are asking those in the area to stay indoors.

There's no word on how many people were hurt, the severity of their injuries or on a possible motive for the attacks.

Canada: Free speech has limits, should not hurt other communities, Prime Minister Trudeau says

CANADA: Witness testimony in Huawei CFO's U.S. extradition case enters final day

VANCOUVER (Reuters) - A fifth and final scheduled day of witness testimony in the extradition case of Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou in a Canadian court will conclude on Friday, although lawyers for both sides proposed days be added to hear all witnesses.

Meng, 48, was arrested by Canadian police on a U.S. warrant in December 2018 while on a layover in Vancouver, bound for Mexico. The United States charged her with bank fraud, accusing her of misleading HSBC about Huawei Technologies Co Ltd’s business dealings in Iran, causing the bank to break U.S. sanctions.

Canada-China spat heats up over ambassador’s alleged threat

TORONTO (AP) — The diplomatic spat between Canada and China grew more heated on Monday as Beijing denounced press criticism of its ambassador to Ottawa, only to have Canada’s deputy prime minister and opposition leader echo the criticism.

Canada reports over 9,700 COVID-19 deaths

OTTAWA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Canada's COVID-19 deaths reached 9,751 as of Thursday afternoon, while the number of infections stood at 193,600, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Canada's daily case counts continue to rise with an average of 2,323 new cases being reported daily in the most recent seven days, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada on Thursday.

The agency said that over the past week, there have been on average over 850 individuals with COVID-19 in Canadian hospitals each day and over 17 deaths reported daily.

Trudeau announces additional funding for food banks in Canada amid COVID-19 spikes

OTTAWA, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday urged Canadians to stem the spread of the COVID-19 as the country is at a tipping point of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We're at a tipping point in this pandemic. Not only is the second wave underway, yesterday we hit the highest daily recorded cases, well above what we saw this spring," he said at a press conference.
