Canada court to hear more witness testimony in Huawei CFO's U.S. extradition case

VANCOUVER (Reuters) - A Canadian court will hear testimony from a technical witness on Monday in the case to extradite Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou to the United States.

The witness will testify via video from Ontario about the federal police force’s email system at prosecutors’ request.

Canada health regulator approves Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine

TORONTO (AP) — Canada’s health regulator approved Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine Wednesday, days ahead of possible approval in the United States, and said it hopes to start giving the shots next week.

The vaccine made by U.S. drugmaker Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech vaccine already has been authorized for use by the United Kingdom and Bahrain, and officials have said they expect the U.S. authorization within days.

Canada's COVID-19 figures hit new records

OTTAWA, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- COVID-19 cases reported new records in Canada, with a total of 406,839 cases and 12,583 deaths as of Saturday afternoon, according to CTV.

Quebec set a new high record on Saturday in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, reporting 2,031 new cases.

It is the first time in Canada that a daily increase in confirmed cases has surpassed 2,000 in a single province. It also broke the previous record number of new cases set on Dec. 1 when the province confirmed 1,513 new cases.

Canada extends int'l travel restrictions to stem COVID-19 spread

OTTAWA, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Canada on Sunday announced an extension of restrictions on international traveling to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In a news release issued Sunday, Canadian Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair announced that travel restrictions on U.S. citizens to enter Canada will be extended until Dec. 21, and restrictions on travelers arriving from other countries will be extended until Jan. 21.

Canada blocks bulk exports of some prescription drugs in response to Trump import plan

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada on Saturday blocked bulk exports of prescription drugs if they would create a shortage at home, in response to outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to allow imports from Canada to lower some drug prices for Americans.

“Certain drugs intended for the Canadian market are prohibited from being distributed for consumption outside of Canada if that sale would cause or worsen a drug shortage,” Health Minister Patty Hajdu said in a statement.

VANCOUVER (Reuters) - A Canadian police officer stationed at the Vancouver airport who rejected a plan to arrest Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou on the plane she arrived on two years ago, on Friday testified that at the time he told other police officers the best course was to allow border agents to interrogate Meng before arresting her.

The testimony from Ross Lundie, a sergeant with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Vancouver International Airport detachment, came at the end of two weeks of witness cross-examination in Meng’s U.S. extradition case.

CANADA: Police officer at Vancouver airport to face questioning in Huawei CFO's U.S. extradition case

VANCOUVER (Reuters) - A police officer stationed at Vancouver’s airport who rejected a plan to arrest Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou on the plane she arrived on two years ago will face more questioning from Meng’s lawyers on Friday.

Meng, 48, was arrested on a U.S. warrant on charges of bank fraud for allegedly misleading HSBC about Huawei Technologies Co Ltd’s business dealings in Iran, causing the bank to break U.S. sanctions.

Meng has said she is innocent and is fighting the extradition from under house arrest in Vancouver.
