UN envoy to Yemen arrives in Iran for peace talks

08 Feb 2021; MEMO: The United Nations special envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, yesterday arrived in Iran on an official visit to discuss efforts to bring peace to Yemen, his office said in a statement.

During the two-day visit, Griffiths will meet with Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and a number of Iranian officials.

Iran, Syria urge to accelerate establishment of joint bank

TEHRAN, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Iran and Syria have called for accelerating the establishment of a joint bank to boost bilateral trade, Iran Daily reported on Saturday.

"In order to increase economic exchanges, it has been proposed that we establish a joint bank to support economic activities," head of the Iran-Syria Joint Chamber of Commerce Keyvan Kashefi said in a meeting with the Syrian officials in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Iran top diplomat urges Biden to return to nuclear deal

(Reuters) - Iran’s foreign minister urged Washington to act fast to return to the nuclear accord, pointing out that legislation passed by parliament forces the government to harden its nuclear stance if U.S. sanctions are not eased by Feb. 21.

Mohammad Javad Zarif also referred to elections in Iran in June. If a hardline president is elected, this could further jeopardize the deal.

Iran tests new satellite launcher

02 Feb 2021; MEMO: Iran said on Monday it had successfully tested a satellite launcher to help achieve its "most powerful rocket engine", in a move likely to trigger protests from the United States and stoke tensions over Tehran's nuclear and missile programmes, Reuters reported.

The United States, Iran's long time foe, fears such long-range ballistic technology used to put satellites into orbit could also be used to launch nuclear warheads. Tehran denies the US accusation.

Iranian talks with Taliban were on prior knowledge of Afghan Gov't

Tehran, Feb 1, IRNA – Iranian negotiations with Taliban were held on prior knowledge of Afghan Government, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Monday.  

Khatibzadeh made the remarks speaking during his weekly press conference.

Noting that Taliban is part of Afghanistan’s reality, the spokesman said that Taliban political offices are officially working in Doha and Pakistan and the group is currently involved in official negotiations with the Afghan government as well.  

Iran rejects new talks on nuclear deal

01 Feb 2021; MEMO: Iran refuses to conduct any further negotiations or involve any new partners in the 2015 nuclear deal, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Saturday.

"The nuclear agreement is a multilateral international agreement ratified by UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and it is non-negotiable, and the parties to it are clear and not subject to change," local media quoted Khatibzadeh as saying.

Iran parliament speaker slams US conditions, says sanctions must be lifted

01 Feb 2021; MEMO: Iran has begun rotating centrifuges in response to the statements issued by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Washington would not rejoin the nuclear deal until Tehran showed full compliance with it, the Islamic Republic's parliament speaker said yesterday.
