India: CAA implementation in Bengal soon: BJP's Vijayvargiya

Kolkata, Dec 12 (PTI) The Citizenship Amendment Act will be implemented in West Bengal soon, BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya Saturday said.

Vijayvargiya, the BJP Bengal minder who was talking to reporters at Thakurnagar in North 24 Parganas district which is largely inhabited by backward Matua community, did not say anything on the contentious National Register of Citizens.

India: Spectacular Geminid meteor shower will enthral skygazers

Kolkata, Dec 13 (PTI) A spectacular meteor shower will enthral skygazers in the city and elsewhere on the night of December 13 and early hours of December 14.

The Geminid meteor shower, which peaks this year on the late night of December 13, is the most intense meteor shower of the year, Director of M P Birla Planetarium and well-known astrophysicist Debiprasad Duari said in a statement on Saturday.

India: Mamata compares BJP leadership to Hitler, Mussolini

Kolkata, Dec 10 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister hit out at the BJP on Thursday comparing its leadership to dictators Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini and claimed that the party is indulging in false propaganda.

Banerjee, who is among the vocal critics of the saffron party, said it has a "prepared script" to break the movements against it and is trying to do so with the farmers' movement.

The TMC supremo criticised BJP national president J P Nadda's outreach programme in her constituency Bhawanipore in the city on Wednesday and said it was poorly attended.

India: Will not allow NRC in Bengal, says Mamata

Bangaon (WB), Dec 9 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday asserted that her government will not allow implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) or National Population Register (NPR) in the state.

Maintaining that all the residents of the state are citizens of the country and no one can change that, Banerjee accused the BJP of trying to play divisive politics using the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

India: Attempts to show black flags to Nadda in city

Kolkata, Dec 9 (PTI) Alleged Trinamool Congress supporters Wednesday attempted to show black flags to BJP national president J P Nadda from a spot outside the newly opened election office of the saffron party at Hastings area of the city when he was inside it.

About 50 people tried to wave black flags from the spot located some distance away from the newly opened office.

They also shouted "BJP go back" when Nadda entered the building.

India: BJP resorting to politics of bandh

Kolkata, Dec 8 (PTI) Ruling TMC on Tuesday accused BJP of resorting to the politics of bandh in West Bengal and asserted that the reason for the death of the saffron party worker in Siliguri was not firing by police but from shot gun pellets probably carried by a participant of the BJYM rally on December 7.

The BJP observed a 12-hour shutdown in certain parts of north Bengal on Tuesday over the death of its supporter during the rally.

India: TMC begins sit-in demonstration in support of farmers

Kolkata, Dec 8 (PTI) The TMC on Tuesday began its three-day-long sit-in demonstration against the new farm laws and demanded that the "anti-people" legislation should be withdrawn immediately.

The farmers and agricultural workers wing of the TMC, led by its state president and TMC MLA Becharam Manna, began its sit-in demonstration in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in central Kolkata this afternoon.

Party activists carrying placards and demanding the withdrawal of the new farm laws shouted slogans against the BJP government at the Centre.

Kolkata, Dec 6 (PTI) Cautioning against any attempt of polarisation along religious lines, West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim on Sunday asked people to steer clear of "certain elements" who seek votes by chanting 'Jai Shree Ram' or 'Allah Ho Akbar'.

India: CPI(M) activist stabbed to death by "RSS criminals": Vijayaraghavan

Kollam, Dec 7 (PTI) A 52-year-old CPI(M) activist was stabbed to death near here, allegedly by a BJP worker, police said on Monday.

Munroe Island resident Manilal was attacked last night by Ashokan (55), who was later arrested, they said.

CPI(M) state secretary in-charge A Vijayaraghavan said the killing was an attempt to disrupt peace ahead of polling for the first phase of the local body elections on Tuesday.

India: CAA likely to be implemented from Jan: Vijayvargiya

Barasat (WB), Dec 5 (PTI) Senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya on Saturday said that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act is likely to be implemented from January next year as the Centre and the saffron party are keen to grant citizenship to the large refugee population in West Bengal.

The BJP national general secretary accused the TMC government of not being sympathetic to the cause of the refugees.
