Kashmir: Sister and daughter of Farooq Abdullah released

Srinagar, Oct 16 (PTI) Women protestors, including National Conference President Farooq Abdullah's sister and daughter, who were arrested on Tuesday after they took out a protest march, were released on bail by a court here this evening, officials said.

Abdullah's sister Suraiya, his daughter Safiya and 11 other women furnished a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and surety of Rs 40,000 each under section 107 of criminal procedure code, giving an assurance that they would maintain peace, the officials said.

Kashmir: Hours after mobiles restored, SMS services blocked

Srinagar, Oct 15 (PTI) SMS services were withdrawn as a "precautionary measure" hours after the government restored post-paid mobile connections in Kashmir, officials said on Tuesday.

Mobile phone services for post-paid subscribers resumed in Kashmir after 72 days on Monday noon, but without any internet facilities. By about 5 pm, SMS services had been suspended too, dulling the euphoria of about 40 lakh subscribers delighted at the prospect of their phones coming back to life, officials said.

Post-paid mobile phone services restored in Kashmir but people can’t make calls

Kashmir; 14 Oct 2019; (UMM): Government has restored post-paid mobile phone services in Kashmir from noon on Monday, but many subscribers cannot make calls due to unpaid bills accumulated during 72 days of the shutdown. They can’t pay the bills either as the internet facility is yet to be restored.

Kashmir: Postpaid mobile phone services in Kashmir restored

Srinagar, Oct 14 (PTI) Postpaid mobile services on all networks were restored in the Kashmir Valley on Monday, 72 days after they were snapped following restrictions.

Some 40 lakh postpaid mobile phones have become operational from Monday noon.

Restrictions were imposed after the Centre on August 5 abrogated the state's special status and bifurcated it into Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, which will come into being on October 31.

India: Five injured in grenade attack in Srinagar

Srinagar, Oct 12 (PTI) Five people were injured in a grenade attack by suspected militants in a market area in Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar on Saturday, police said.

Militants hurled a grenade in Hari Singh High Street market area -- a few hundred metres from the city centre Lal Chowk -- this afternoon, a police official said.

The grenade exploded on a roadside in the market, injuring five people, he said, adding that the wounded were rushed to a hospital here.

Kashmir: Restrictions lifted in 99 pc areas in J-K: Govt claims

Srinagar, Oct 12 (PTI) Restrictions on movement of people have been lifted in "over 99 per cent" areas of Jammu and Kashmir, state government spokesperson Rohit Kansal said on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters here, he asserted that the curbs were necessary to prevent "externally-aided terrorists" from disturbing peace in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of abrogation of the state's special status under Article 370 in August.

He also said the cases of those who were detained, including political leaders, were being reviewed by the government for their release.

Kashmir: More than 200 people test positive for dengue

Jammu, Oct 12 (PTI) As many as 222 people have been tested positive for dengue in Jammu and Kashmir this year, a health department official said on Saturday, asserting that there is no need to panic as necessary measures are in place to deal with the vector-borne disease.

Last year, the total number of dengue patients in the state was 214, while no one has died due to the disease in the last four years, the official said.

At 75, Jammu district accounted for the maximum cases followed by Samba (73), Kathua (24) and Rajouri (22).

Indian army jawan killed in Pak shelling along LoC in Rajouri

Jammu, Oct 11 (PTI) An Army jawan was killed when Pakistani troops resorted to firing and shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Friday, a defence spokesperson said.

Two jawans were also injured in the Pakistani shelling in Akhnoor sector of Jammu district, officials said.

"Today, the ceasefire violation took place in Nowshera sector from 5.50 am to 7.30 am," he said.

India: Delegation of Muslim spiritual leaders to visit J&K

Jaipur, Oct 10 (PTI) A delegation of Sufi leaders and spiritual heads of various shrines across the country will visit Jammu and Kashmir between October 12 and 14 to meet the locals and assess the ground situation there.

The spiritual head of Ajmer dargah, Zainul Abedin Ali Khan, has taken the initiative to send the delegation comprising 18 members that will be led by his son Nasiruddin Chisty.

India: Cong announces boycott of BDC polls in J-K

Jammu, Oct 9 (PTI) The Congress on Wednesday decided to boycott the Block Development Council (BDC) elections in Jammu and Kashmir, citing "indifferent" attitude of the state administration and continued detention of senior party leaders.

BDC polls will be held in Jammu and Kashmir on October 24. These will be the first elections to be held in the state since its special status was revoked under Article 370 on August 5.
