India: Public transport increases in Srinagar: Officials

Srinagar, Nov 18 (PTI) The movement of public transport in Srinagar improved significantly on Monday as life was inching towards normalcy in the valley after a prolonged shutdown against the Centre's decision to scrap Jammu and Kashmir's special status, officials said.

Most modes of public transport have been restored across Kashmir as mini-buses have started plying on more routes. Intra-district and inter-district connectivity have improved significantly, according to officials.

Srinagar, Nov 16, PTI/GANASHAKTI: Two trial runs on Srinagar-Banihal railway line were conducted successfully on Saturday, paving the way for resumption of full services in Kashmir Valley from Sunday, more than three months after they were suspended due to security reasons, officials said.

The trial runs, through the restive south Kashmir, were done after a thorough safety audit of the section, a railway official told PTI.

He said rail services in the valley should be fully operational from Sunday.

India: Mehbooba Mufti shifted to govt house in Srinagar

Srinagar, Nov 15 (PTI) Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti was on Friday shifted to a government accommodation in the city from a tourist hut located at the foothills of Zaberwan range, officials said here.

The move was necessitated as the approaching winters and frequent power cuts made it difficult to stay in the hut which was converted into a jail after she was detained on August 5 this year.

India: LG says poll process in J&K to begin 'soon'

Jammu, Nov 14 (PTI) Hinting at holding Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir in the near future, Lieutenant Governor (LG) Girish Chandra Murmu on Thursday said the election process will begin soon.

"Election will come. It is a Union territory with a legislature, it will not continue like this (LG's rule)," he said, while addressing a function of the police department.

"The process for holding the election will come soon," Murmu said, speaking at the Attestation-cum-Passing out Parade of the 14th batch of Constables, held in the Talwara area of Reasi district.

Heavy snowfall across Kashmir, highway closed

Srinagar, Nov 7 (PTI) Heavy snowfall across Kashmir on Thursday cut off the valley from the rest of the country as the arterial Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was closed for traffic while all flights to and fro Srinagar airport were cancelled, officials said here.

An official of the traffic department told PTI that roads which connect the summer capital with far-flung areas like Gurez, Macchil, Keran and Tangdhar have also been closed due to adverse weather conditions.

Over 2000 vehicles are stranded on the highway due to the closure.

Srinagar/Jammu, Nov 5 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition challenging alleged house arrest of Mustafa Kamal -- the NC additional general secretary and brother of party president Farooq Abdullah -- and ANC chief Begum Khalida Shah along with her son Muzaffar Shah.

Kashmir: Ten shops gutted in fire in Srinagar's Batamaloo

Srinagar, Nov 5 (PTI) Ten shops were gutted in a fire that broke out at Iqbal market in Srinagar's Batamaloo area, police said on Tuesday.

The fire broke out on Monday night in Batamaloo area of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ten shops were gutted. The cause of the fire is believed to be a short-circuit, a police official said, ruling out any attempts of sabotage.

He, however, said the police have taken samples from the spot and sent them for forensic examination.

Kashmir: Grenade attack in Srinagar, one dead

Srinagar, Nov 4; PTI/GANASHAKTI:  A civilian was killed and 13 others were injured as terrorists lobbed a grenade in a busy market area here on Monday, police said.

The attack took place at 1:20 pm in Hari Singh High Street market area.

While one person died in the attack, 13 others were injured, two of them critically, they said.

Security forces have cordoned off the area.
