One Iranian missile lands in field outside Irbil

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The latest on U.S.-Iran tensions after the U.S. airstrike that killed Iran’s top general (all times local):

11:35 a.m.

At least one missile from the Iranian strike against U.S. forces in Iraq on Wednesday landed in a field near Bardarash, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Irbil, the capital of Iraq’s self-governing Kurdish region.

An Iraqi Kurdish channel, Rudaw TV, showed video of police inspecting the impact site and removing shrapnel.

Russian lawmaker warns of risk of nuclear war

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A Russian lawmaker warns that a conflict between the U.S. and Iran might lead to a nuclear war.

The comments by Vladimir Dzhabarov, lawmaker with Russia’s upper house of parliament, on Wednesday followed an Iranian missile strike at military bases in Iraq used by U.S. forces. The strike was in retaliation for the U.S. killing Iran’s top military commander in Baghdad.

Ukrainian airplane crashes near Iran’s capital, killing 176

SHAHEDSHAHR, Iran (AP) — A Ukrainian airplane carrying 176 people crashed on Wednesday shortly after takeoff from Tehran’s main airport, killing all onboard, Iranian state TV and officials in Ukraine said.

The plane had taken off from Imam Khomeini International Airport in the Iranian capital when a fire struck one of its engines, said Qassem Biniaz, a spokesman for Iran’s Road and Transportation Ministry. The pilot of the aircraft then lost control of the plane, sending it crashing into the ground, Biniaz said, according to the state-run IRNA news agency.

Iranians mass for burial in hometown of general killed by US

KERMAN (Iran), Jan 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Iranians gathered in Kerman for the burial Tuesday of top general Qasem Soleimani in the final stage of funeral processions after he was killed in a US strike in Iraq.

The massive number of mourners in the hometown of the slain commander of the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force foreign operations arm appeared to match the huge turnout seen in the cities of Tehran, Qom, Mashhad and Ahvaz.

Iran Takes Final Step To End Commitments To Nuke Deal

TEHRAN, Jan 6 (NNN-IRNA) – Iran announced the fifth and final step to end its commitments to the landmark 2015 nuclear deal.

“In the fifth step of withdrawing from its commitments, the Islamic republic drops the last key restriction under the nuclear deal, namely ‘restriction on the number of centrifuges’.”

Therefore, “Iran’s nuclear programme will no longer brace any practical restrictions, including the level and purity of enrichment, the mass of enriched materials and R&D activities,” read the announcement.

Iran Criticises Europeans For “Unconstructive” Stance Over U.S. Killing Of General

TEHRAN, Jan 6 (NNN-IRNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Mousavi Sunday criticised as “unconstructive” some Europeans’ stances over the recent U.S. assassination of senior Iranian military commander.

“The recent Europeans’ stances (over the assassination of general Soleimani) have been rude to some extent and have not been constructive and acceptable,” Mousavi said.

He noted that “the destruction of Daesh by the resistance groups and by general Soleimani has brought security for the Europeans.”

Blowback: Iran abandons nuclear limits after US killing

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The blowback over the U.S. killing of a top Iranian general mounted Sunday as Iran announced it will no longer abide by the limits contained in the 2015 nuclear deal and Iraq’s Parliament called for the expulsion of all American troops from Iraqi soil.

The twin developments could bring Iran closer to building an atomic bomb and enable the Islamic State group to stage a comeback in Iraq, making the Middle East a far more dangerous and unstable place.

Slain Iran general’s successor and daughter warn US troops

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — An Iranian general who replaced the leader killed by a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad vowed in remarks aired Monday to take revenge as Tehran abandoned the remaining limits of its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers in response to the slaying.

Esmail Ghaani’s threat comes as the blowback over the U.S. killing of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani. Separately, Iraq’s parliament has called for the expulsion of all American troops from Iraqi soil.
