India: Cong releases list of 86 candidates for Kerala polls

New Delhi, Mar 14 (PTI) The Congress on Sunday released its first list of 86 candidates for the upcoming Kerala assembly elections.

Former chief minister Oommen Chandy will contest from Puthuppally, while Leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly Ramesh Chennithala has been fielded from Haripad Assembly constituency.

Sitting MP from Vadakara K Muraleedharan, who is the son of veteran Congress leader K Karunakaran, will contest in Nemom, the only seat in the state currently represented by the BJP.

India: Farmers' protest against new farm laws may continue till Dec: Tikait

Allahabad, Mar 14 (PTI) The Bhartiya Kisan Union-led farmer agitation against the three central farm laws may continue till December this year, the outfit's national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait said here on Sunday.

Tikait made the statement while talking to reporters here after his recent visit to the poll-bound West Bengal.

India: Four of family arrested for female infanticide in Gujarat

Mehsana, Mar 14 (PTI) An offence was registered against four members of a family for allegedly killing a month-old baby girl in December 2019 at Kadi town of Gujarat's Mehsana district in a case of female infanticide, police said on Sunday.

The infant's parents and grandparents had falsely told the investigators that she had died due to suffocation during breastfeeding, but her post-mortem revealed that she was strangulated to death, police said.

India-Bangladesh meet on river water sharing on Mar 16

New Delhi, Mar 15 (PTI) Top officials of the water resources ministries of India and Bangladesh will meet here on Tuesday to discuss issues related to river water-sharing and flood forecast, sources said on Monday.

The Indian delegation will be headed by Pankaj Kumar, secretary in the Jal Shakti Ministry. The Bangladesh side will be headed by senior secretary Kabir Bin Anwar, the sources added.

The meeting takes place ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh later this month.

India: Nationwide strike impacts banking services of PSU banks

New Delhi, Mar 15 (PTI) Banking operations including cheque clearance across the country got affected on Monday as bankers under the aegis of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) have gone on a nationwide strike to protest against the proposed privatisation of two state-owned lenders.

UFBU, an umbrella body of nine unions, had given a strike call for March 15 and 16, and claimed that about 10 lakh bank employees and officers of the banks will participate in the strike

Kanpur: There is difference in parking charges at the medical college here. If there is spurt in rate at Cardiology institute, other places provide parking at cheaper rate.

Undeniably the vehicle parking charge at Cardiology institute in GSVM College has been far higher than other parking slots at the LLR Hospital.

It is to be noted here that there runs three separate stands at LLR hospital. There has been no increase in the rate there. Although the rate between bike and car may vary.

India activist breaks silence on sedition arrest, says she felt 'violated'

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - An Indian climate activist linked to Greta Thunberg said on Saturday she felt “violated” by her arrest last month on sedition charges and her treatment by the media, her first comments on a case that sparked international criticism.

Disha Ravi, a 22-year-old vegan and member of Thunberg’s Fridays for Future movement, was charged in February over an online document about months-long protests by Indian farmers.

India: RSS' highest decision-making body to meet on March 19-20

Bengaluru, Mar 14 (PTI): Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS), the highest decision-making body of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), will meet here on March 19 and 20.

The proceedings of the ABPS would begin on March 19 and conclude on March 20 at Janaseva Vidya Kendra, the RSS said in a press release.

The ABPS meets once a year in different cities of the country, and this is the 8th such meet happening in Karnataka.

India: UP STF arrests PFI 'training commander'

Gorakhpur (UP), Mar 14 (PTI) Police in Uttar Pradesh have arrested a man whom they alleged to be a training commander of the Popular Front of India (PFI).

Mohammad Rashid was apprehended from near Basti railway station in Basti district of the state when he was trying to go to Mumbai via Lucknow to take part in the upcoming meetings or training sessions of the PFI, the Uttar Pradesh Police's Special Task Force (STF) said on Sunday.
