India: Husband, in-laws booked for woman's murder for dowry

Bhadohi, May 15 (PTI) Police here booked a woman's husband and in-laws for allegedly killing her, an official said on Saturday.

Circle Officer Ashok Kumar Singh said Hansika (23), daughter of Akhilesh Kumar Shukla, a resident of Lucknow, had married to Shivam Dubey three years ago.

Singh said family members of Hansika alleged that after one year of her marriage, her in-laws started demanding dowry and used to beat her up.

On Friday, her in-laws informed that she has committed suicide.

India: BJP leader performs 'havan' in J&K to ward off coronavirus

Jammu, May 15 (PTI) The BJP's Jammu and Kashmir vice president Yudhvir Sethi performed a 'havan' on Saturday to "ward off" the coronavirus, a party spokesman said.

The fire ritual was performed following all COVID-19-related guidelines, the spokesman said, adding that Sethi was joined by party colleagues Anil Masoom, Ajit Yogi, Parveen Kerni, Pawan Sharma, Roshan Lal Sharma and Satish Kumar.

India: Congress MP Rajeev Satav dies after recovering from Corona infection

Pune/New Delhi, May 16 (PTI) Congress MP Rajeev Satav died at a private hospital in Pune on Sunday, days after recovering from the coronavirus infection, hospital sources said.

He was 46.

Satav was on ventilator support at the hospital after his health deteriorated. He had tested positive for COVID-19 on April 22.

He was later diagnosed with a new viral infection and was in a critical condition, they said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condoled his demise and said it is a big loss to him.

India: Covid lockdown extended in Haryana till May 24

Chandigarh, May 16 (PTI) The Haryana government on Sunday extended the coronavirus lockdown in the state till May 24.

The lockdown which already stood imposed in the state till May 17 was extended by a week.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Home and Health Minister Anil Vij said, "Mahamari Alert / Surkshit Haryana extended from 17 May to 24 May. Stringent measures will be taken to implement the alert (lockdown).

Last Sunday, Minister Vij had extended the lockdown from May 10 till May 17.

India: Free Wi-fi now at 6,000 railway stations

New Delhi, May 16 (PTI) The railways has enabled free Wi-Fi at its 6000th station as the facility went live at Hazaribagh town of Jharkhand on Saturday, the national transporter said.

The railways provided Wi-Fi facility first at the Mumbai Railway station in 2016, reaching its 5000th station, at Midanpore in West Bengal.

On May 15, Jarapada station in Angul District of Odisha was also provided with Wi-Fi facility, it said on Sunday.

India: A jab at the vaccination centre remains tougher task

Kanpur: One can easily understand the anger and pain of a person who after waiting for hours in the queue was told of end of the vaccine just at the time he nears  for the jab. If the person happens to be old his agony heightens. Several vaccination centres were reported to be complaining of doses finishing just afternoon. In the meantime, people turning up for the second dose at the city's different vaccination centres have also grumbled at the paucity of the second dose.

Indian police find bodies on riverbank amid raging COVID-19

PRAYAGRAJ, India (AP) — Police are reaching out to villagers in northern India to investigate the recovery of bodies buried in shallow sand graves or washing up on the Ganges River banks, prompting speculation on social media that they were the remains of COVID-19 victims.

In jeeps and boats, the police used portable loudspeakers with microphones asking people not to dispose of the bodies in rivers. “We are here to help you perform the last rites,” police said.

Indian capital chief minister announces oxygen concentrator banks, home delivery

NEW DELHI, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday announced the setting up of oxygen concentrator banks across the national capital region.

According to Kejriwal, the bank will be set up in every district in Delhi to give a boost to the fight against COVID-19.

India: Man held for hoarding, black marketing oxygen cylinders

New Delhi, May 15 (PTI) A 29-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly indulging in black marketing of oxygen cylinders in southwest Delhi's Dwarka area, police said on Saturday.

Four oxygen cylinders have been seized from Mohit's possession, they said, adding that the car used in their transportation has also been seized.

The police said Mohit, a resident of Dwarka, owns a mobile shop.

India: No interim protection from arrest to Kalra in oxygen black marketing case: HC

New Delhi, May 14 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Friday declined to grant interim protection from arrest to Navneet Kalra, seeking anticipatory bail in connection with alleged black marketing of oxygen concentrators, agreeing with the reasons given by the trial court while denying him the relief.

A sessions court had on Thursday dismissed Kalra's anticipatory bail plea, saying the allegations against him were serious and his custodial interrogation was required to "unearth the entire conspiracy".
