India: NIA court rejects peasant leader Akhil Gogoi's bail plea

Guwahati, Aug 7 (PTI) A special NIA court on Friday rejected the bail application of peasant leader Akhil Gogoi, who was arrested for his alleged role in a violent protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Assam.

"The court rejected the bail application. We are yet to study the detailed judgement and find out the cause of rejection. Accordingly, we will move the High Court in next seven days," Gogoi's advocate Santanu Borthakur told PTI here.

India: Woman sexually harassed in UP, her family members thrashed

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Aug 7 (PTI) A 20-year-old woman allegedly faced sexual harassment from two youths and her family members were later thrashed in Kutubpur village here, police said on Friday.

The incident happened on Thursday in the district, they said.

Police said the two accused men entered the woman's house and harassed her when she was alone. Later, three family members of the victim, including two women, were beaten up when they tried to question the accused who live in the same neighbourhood.

India: Jajmau requires heavy rains amid humidity

Kanpur: Jajmau still lacks a dose of heavy rains. The clouds gather but it is not bringing rains to ward off the humid conditions prevailing all around. The real feel of the hourly temperature at 6 pm stays at 37° though the lowest temperature has been recorded at 32° at the time.

The residents living in the area are not able to get relief from humid weather which stays at 68%. It is proof of extremely humid condition.

Undoubtedly the humid conditions have been occurring since the last several days in the absence of heavy downpours in this tannery town. 

India: Army chief meets Uttar Pradesh CM in Lucknow

Lucknow, Aug 7 (PTI) Army Chief Gen MM Naravane met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at his official residence here on Friday.

"It was a courtesy meeting between the two. The chief minister presented a memento to the Army chief during the meeting," a state government official said.

Naravane is in the state capital to visit the Army's Central Command Headquarters.

India: Bishop Franco Mulakkal granted bail

Kottayam (Ker), Aug 7 (PTI) A trial court here on Friday granted bail to Bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping a nun in Kerala, with stringent conditions and directed him to be present on the dates of hearing of the case.

The Additional Sessions Court had cancelled the bail granted to the Bishop on July 13 for failing to appear for the trial and issued a Non Bailable Warrant against him.

Mulakkal was present in the Court on Friday when it considered the matter.

India: HC grants bail to Israeli criminal Atala in assault case

Panaji, Aug 7 (PTI) The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court has granted bail to Israeli national Yaniv Benaim alias Atala in connection with the assault case registered against him.

A single-judge bench of Justice Nutan Sardesai on Thursday granted bail to Atala after asking him to furnish a bond of Rs 50,000 and surety.

India: Over 60,000 Covid cases in a day for 1st time

New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) Registering over 60,000 cases in 24 hours for the first time, India's COVID-19 tally galloped past 20 lakh (2 million) on Friday, while the number of recoveries surged to 13.78 lakh, according to Union Health Ministry data.

The coronavirus infection tally had crossed 19 lakh just two days ago.

India hits 2 million coronavirus cases as deaths pass 41,000

NEW DELHI (AP) — India hit another grim milestone in the coronavirus pandemic on Friday, crossing 2 million cases of infection and more than 41,000 deaths.

India’s health ministry also reported recoveries as a share of total cases are also growing. India has the third-highest caseload in the world after the United States and Brazil. It has the fifth-most deaths and its fatality rate of about 2% is far lower than the other hardest-hit countries. The rate in the U.S. is 3.3%, and in Brazil, it’s 3.4%, Johns Hopkins University figures showed.

India: Bihar Flood Situation Worsens

BIHAR, Aug 6 (NNN-UNI) – Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, made an aerial survey of the affected areas of north Bihar and visited a village in Darbhanga district, which has been hit by the calamity.

According to the disaster management department, the death toll in flood related incidents remained at 19, as no fresh casualty was reported.

The size of the flood-affected populace, however, grew by nearly three lakh since Tuesday, and the number of panchayats hit by the calamity was 1,165, a rise of 13.

Standoff with China will be long, India warns in pulled statement

GUWAHATI, India (Reuters) - India’s defence ministry has warned, in a statement since removed from its website, that a military standoff with China that began with border fighting in June is likely to be a long one, despite multiple rounds of talks between the nuclear-armed rivals to defuse the tension.

The ministry said in an update for June - which has now been removed - that Chinese forces had breached the border in the Kugrang Nala and Gogra areas and the north shore of Pangong Tso lake in the northern Indian territory of Ladakh on May 17-18.
