India: JJP offered 40 seats to BSP in Haryana: Chautala

Chandigarh, Sep 7 (PTI) Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) chief Dushyant Chautala has said his party had believed in strengthening the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and offered it 40 out of 90 constituencies for the Haryana assembly polls, adding that it would now contest all the seats.

The comments come after the BSP had on Friday night announced its decision to part ways with the JJP and field candidates on all seats in the state, less than a month after the alliance was formed.

India: Class I student booked for attempt to rape in Haryana

Chandigarh, Sep 2 (PTI) The Haryana Police has registered a case of attempt to rape against a Class 1 student on a complaint of the mother of a five-year-old victim, an official said.

Police are trying identify the boy.

The incident took place three days ago in Sirsa district, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ramesh Kumar said.

India: Youth Congress launches poll campaign in Haryana

Chandigarh, Aug 28 (PTI) Indian Youth Congress interim president Srinivas B V on Wednesday launched the 'Jan Shakti Abhiyan' of the party ahead of the assembly elections in Haryana.

The aim of the campaign is to highlight 'failures' of the present regime and works carried out by the previous Congress government.

Addressing a press conference here along with Haryana Youth Congress president Sachin Kundu, Srinivas said people of the state had realised that the BJP had made "false promises" due to which they would bring the Congress back to power.

India: Addicts spending up to Rs 2,000 a day on drugs: Study

Chandigarh, Aug 23 (PTI) Drug addicts in five states including Punjab are spending up to Rs 2,000 a day for buying and consuming narcotics with over 70 per cents of the addicts falling in the age group of 15 to 35 years, a study has revealed.

The study sponsored by the Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR) identified peer pressure, unemployment and easy availability of drugs as some of the key factors behind the drug menace that, it said, poses grave threat to the social, economic and political stability of the society.

India: Gurgaon SHO held for raping woman

Gurgaon, Aug 11 (PTI) A station house officer of a Gurgaon police station has been arrested for allegedly raping and then blackmailing a woman by making her obscene video, police said on Sunday.

The accused SHO of Sadar police station Dalbir Singh, who was set to retire next year, was arrested on Saturday after a complaint was lodged on Friday.

He was arrested after an internal inquiry found him guilty, a police officer said.

India: Cong demands Khattar's dismissal over 'brides from Kashmir' remark

New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI) The Congress on Saturday demanded immediate dismissal of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and an FIR against him over the controversial 'brides from Kashmir' remark, with party leader Rahul Gandhi claiming his comments reflect what RSS training does to the mind of a "weak, insecure and pathetic man".

Khattar hit back at Gandhi saying "weak, insecure and pathetic" are adjectives that people use for the Congress president as he accused him of "manufacturing statements".

India: 19 inmates at Ambala Central Jail tested HIV positive

Ambala (Har), Jul 28 (PTI) Nineteen inmates of the Ambala Central Jail were tested positive for HIV, officials said on Sunday.

They are now getting treatment at the Postgraduate Institute of Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh.

Jail Superintendent Lakhbir Singh Barar told reporters here that the National AIDS Control Society had launched a campaign for the detection of HIV, TB and cataract in the jail.

India: Doctor shot dead in Haryana

Karnal (Haryana), Jul 7 (PTI) A 56-year-old doctor was shot dead by three motorcycle-borne persons in Haryana's Karnal district on Saturday, police said.

The suspects, including a former employee who was terminated from services at a hospital owned by the doctor, have been arrested, the police said.

Rajiv Gupta was attacked when he and his driver left the hospital in Chaura Bazar in a vehicle. Three masked men stopped their motorcycle in front of the SUV and fired at Gupta, an officer said.

India: 2 thrashed in Gurgaon by Gau-rakshaks

Gurgaon, Jun 25 (PTI) Two persons were allegedly assaulted by a mob in Haryana's Gurgaon district on Tuesday on the suspicion of smuggling cattle.

Two pickup vans were intercepted by a group of "cow protection unit" near Islampur village, 3 km from here, in the morning, said Savita Kataria -- the person who led the group.

Shathil Ahmad, a resident of Palwal district, and Tayaid were arrested and a search is on for two others who fled the spot, said Gurgaon police PRO Subhash Bokan.
