Africa's COVID-19 cases pass 4.67 mln: Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa has reached 4,677,798 as of Saturday noon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the 55-member African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic stands at 125,890 while 4,232,974 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease.

South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia and Egypt are the countries with the most cases in the continent, according to the Africa CDC.

Ethiopian police arrest 9 over suspected terror plot

ADDIS ABABA, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Police in Ethiopia's eastern Somali regional state have arrested nine individuals accused of planning terror attacks, an Ethiopian official said on Wednesday.

Ali Hassen, deputy chief commissioner of the Somali region Police Commission, said the nine suspects are accused of plotting terror attacks on various religious sites in the region to coincide with the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fatir, which will be celebrated this year on Thursday, Ethiopia Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) reported.

Ethiopian Orthodox Church head says genocide is taking place in Tigray

(Reuters) --- The head of Ethiopia's Orthodox Church has said that atrocities amounting to genocide are being committed in Tigray, in his first comments on the conflict in the region that broke out in November and has killed thousands.

Abune Mathias, who has been head of the church since 2013, did not say who was responsible for this. He spoke in a video message that was posted on Twitter on Friday by an American religious charity worker.

Ethiopia: Historic water agreements are 'unreasonable'

28 Apr 2021; MEMO: Spokesman for the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry, Dina Mufti, said that the historic agreements to share Nile waters that downstream countries Egypt and Sudan hold on to are "unreasonable and unacceptable."

"The threats made by downstream countries regarding the Renaissance Dam are useless," Mufti added in a briefing to reporters yesterday, adding that his country is counting on the resumption of the Renaissance Dam negotiations under the auspices of the African Union (AU).

Death toll from mid-April ethnic clashes in Ethiopia may be 200, official says

(Reuters) --- The death toll in clashes this month between Ethiopia's two largest ethnic groups, the Oromo and Amhara, in the northern Amhara region may be as high as 200, a senior official said on Sunday, up from previous reports of at least 50.

Residents and officials in Oromiya Special Zone, an area in Amhara with a majority Oromo population, and the town of Ataye said there were deadly clashes in the area on April 16.

ADDIS ABABA, Mar 28 (NNN-ENA) – The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa has reached 4,166,555 as of yesterday noon, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), said.

The Africa CDC, the specialised healthcare agency of the African Union (AU), said, the death toll from the pandemic stood at 111,540, while 3,734,641 patients across the continent, have recovered from the disease.

Africa's confirmed COVID-19 cases surpass 4.07 mln: Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, March 19 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa has reached 4,074,222 as of Friday noon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union (AU), said the death toll related to the pandemic stood at 108,928, while 3,657,699 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease.

Ethiopia insists on Renaissance Dam negotiations under auspices of AU

17 Mar 2021; MEMO: Ethiopia's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Dina Mufti, reaffirmed his country's willingness to resume the Renaissance Dam negotiations with Sudan and Egypt at any time under the auspices of the African Union (AU) only.

On Tuesday, Al-Jazeera TV reported Mufti as saying that Ethiopia had not received any official proposal from the quartet.
