NAGANO, Japan (NNN-AGENCIES) — Thousands of troops and rescue workers were sent in here on Sunday to save stranded residents and fight floods caused by one of the worst typhoons to hit the country in recent history.

At least 30 people were killed in the typhoon that left vast sections of towns under water, CNA quoted public broadcaster NHK saying. Another 15 were missing and 177 injured by Typhoon Hagibis, which paralysed Tokyo on Saturday and dumped record levels of rain around Japan. About 100,000 homes were left without power.

TOKYO (AP) — Rescue crews in Japan dug through mudslides and searched near swollen rivers Monday as they looked for those missing from a typhoon that left as many as 36 dead and caused serious damage in central and northern Japan.

Typhoon Hagibis unleashed torrents of rain and strong winds Saturday that left thousands of homes on Japan’s main island flooded, damaged or without power.

Authorities warned more mudslides were possible with rain forecast for the affected area during the day Monday.

Meanwhile, 14 people are missing across the country, according to a Kyodo News tally, based on information provided by rescuers and other authorities. The number of the missing is 15 from an NHK tally.

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese authorities said they rescued “dozens” of North Korean fishermen after their boat collided with a Japanese patrol vessel and sank Monday in areas crowded with poachers.

Coast Guard officials earlier said that about 20 North Korean crewmembers were thrown into the sea after their steel boat collided with a Japanese Fisheries Agency inspection boat off Japan’s northern coast.

Officials later said they rescued far more than first thought, but did not give an exact number. They said they were still doing the math and making sure nobody was missing.

TOKYO, Oct 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Japanese government is planning to grant pardons to about 600,000 petty criminals to mark Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement ceremony on Oct 22, the Mainichi Shimbun daily said on Wednesday, citing unidentified government sources.

Those pardoned will have restrictions on their legal rights lifted, the paper said. In Japan, those who are convicted and fined are banned from obtaining physicians’, nurses’ and some other licenses for five years.
