Arab League Chief Condemns UK Government Over ‘Illegal’ Jerusalem Embassy Plan

CAIRO, Oct 6 (NNN-MENA) – Arab League Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, voiced deep concern over the recent remarks by British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, about planning to move the country’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the pan-Arab body said.

In a statement, the Arab League (AL) rejected “any unilateral move that violates international laws and the historic and legal status of Jerusalem,” noting, Aboul-Gheit has extended his concern via a televised address to the British Conservative Party Conference on Tuesday.

Egypt calls for return of Rosetta Stone from the British Museum

5 October 2022; MEMO: Prominent Egyptian archaeologists have renewed a call for the return of the Rosetta Stone from the British Museum to Egypt, 200 years after the deciphering of the slab unlocked the secrets of hieroglyphic script and marked the birth of Egyptology.

The archaeologists' online campaign has gathered 2,500 signatures, so far, and aims to "tell Egyptians what has been taken from them", said Monica Hanna, acting Dean of the College of Archaeology in the Egyptian city of Aswan.

Egypt releases new batch of political prisoners

3 October 2022; MEMO: The Presidential Pardon Committee in Egypt yesterday announced the release of a new batch of political prisoners who are being held in "pretrial detention".

A statement by the committee, published by its member, lawyer Tariq Al-Awadi, on Facebook, revealed that "releases are carried out on Sunday and Monday in coordination with the relevant agencies." He did not provide details of how many people would be released.

Egypt: Rights group calls for release of 145 women, 89 children in prison

1 October 2022; MEMO: In light of the reactivation of the Presidential Pardon Committee in April, Egyptian rights group Belady has called for releasing 145 women and 89 children imprisoned on political grounds, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported on Friday.

The rights group also urged the authorities to release female political prisoners and minors, considering the ongoing dialogue aiming to reach a solution to the country's deadlock.

Egypt Seeks 25-30 Percent Annual Increase In Foreign Tourists: Minister

CAIRO, Sept 28 (NNN-MENA) – Egypt aims at increasing the number of foreign tourists by 25 to 30 percent annually, and boosting its revenues, Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Ahmed Issa said, yesterday.

Issa’s remarks came, during an evening ceremony held at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, to mark the annual World Tourism Day on Sept 27, which coincides this year with the 200th anniversary of the creation of the field of Egyptology and the decoding of ancient hieroglyphs.

UN envoy says return to war in Yemen “real”

CAIRO (AP) — The U.N. envoy for Yemen warned that the risk of a return to fighting “is real,” urging warring parties to accept a longer extension of the current ceasefire due to expire next month.

Hans Grundberg’s stark warning late Tuesday came after he met in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, with Rashad al-Alimi, head of the internationally recognized presidential council, and in Oman’s capital of Muscat with Mohammed Abdul-Salam, the chief negotiator of the Houthi rebels. He also met with Saudi and Omani officials to push for a cease-fire extension.

Egypt to start teaching Chinese in middle schools

27 Sep 2022; MEMO: Egypt has launched a pilot programme to teach the Chinese language at 12 public middle schools across three governorates in the upcoming 2022/2023 academic year, the Deputy Minister of Education and Technical Education Mohamed Megahed said.

Megahed made the announcement yesterday during a launch ceremony at the Confucius Institute of Cairo University.

Egypt Slammed Deadly Shooting At Russian School

CAIRO, Sept 27 (NNN-MENA) – The Egyptian Foreign Ministry, yesterday, condemned in the strongest terms, the deadly school shooting at a Russian school.

“It is a heinous terrorist attack that killed and wounded a large number of people, including children,” said Ahmed Abu Zeid, spokesperson of the ministry.

He expressed “Egypt’s condolences for the Russian government, and families of the painful accident, wishing the wounded speedy recovery.”

Egypt, Bulgaria Vowed To Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

CAIRO, Sept 27 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian President, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, and Bulgarian President, Rumen Radev, discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement.

In a phone conversation, the two leaders also discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations, particularly in the economic, investment, and trade sectors, it read.

Sisi confirmed Egypt’s willingness to promote bilateral cooperation at all levels.
