Former Egyptian PM Sherif Ismail dies at 67

CAIRO, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Fomer Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail died on Saturday at the age of 67, Egypt's official news agency MENA reported.

Ismail had a disease in the digestive system, according to earlier official media reports.

Ismail served as the country's prime minister between 2015 and 2018. He was minister of petroleum and mineral resources from 2013 to 2015.

His death was mourned by Eyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and other Egyptian officials.

Egypt: Suez Canal Authority denies agreement with Israel company, takes legal action

04 Feb 2023; MEMO: The Egyptian Suez Canal Authority (SCA) on Friday denied reaching an agreement with an Israeli company to manage its services and decided to take legal action against those spreading the rumour.

A statement by the authority denied the news: "In response to the information that was circulated on some anonymous personal accounts on social media regarding the canal signing a contract with a company to manage its services through a 99-year contract."

Egypt’s Tourism Revenues Hit Record High In Q1 Of FY 2022/23

CAIRO, Feb 3 (NNN-MENA) – Egypt’s tourism revenues rose by 43.5 percent to a record high of 4.1 billion U.S. dollars, in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2022-2023, which runs from July to Sept last year, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) said in a statement, yesterday.

Egypt’s fiscal year begins at the beginning of Jul and ends at the end of Jun, the following year.

Egypt: US seeks to expel Russian mercenaries from Sudan, Libya

CAIRO (AP) — The United States has stepped up pressure on Middle East allies to expel the Wagner Group, a military contractor owned by an oligarch with close ties to Russia’s president, from chaos-stricken Libya and Sudan where it has expanded in recent years, regional officials told The Associated Press.

The U.S. effort described by officials comes as the Biden administration is making a broad push against the mercenaries. The U.S. has slapped new sanctions on the Wagner Group in recent months over its expanding role in Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Three Dead, 32 Wounded In Egypt’s Hospital Fire

CAIRO, Feb 2 (NNN-MENA) – At least three people were killed and 32 others wounded, in a fire that broke out yesterday, at a charitable hospital in the capital, Cairo, said the Egyptian Health Ministry in a statement.

The accident took place at the radiology department of the hospital, located in the El Matareya district, and 12 ambulances were sent to the scene, according to the ministry’s spokesman, Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar.

The injured suffered from burns, fractures or suffocation, and most of them have been taken to nearby hospitals, said Abdel-Ghaffar.

Cargo vessel carrying 63,000 tons of Russian grain arrives at Egypt’s Safaga port — portal

CAIRO, January 28. /TASS/: The PAREA dry cargo ship delivered more than 60,000 tons of grain to the Egyptian port of Safaga on the Red Sea on Saturday, the Alyaum as-Sabia news portal reported.

According to the online resource, the Malta-flagged PAREA vessel has brought 63,000 tons of wheat from Russia to Egypt.

The Russian grain delivered to Safaga is reported to fall under the authority of the Egyptian Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade.

Archaeologist hails possibly 'oldest' mummy yet found in Egypt

CAIRO, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Egyptologists have uncovered a Pharaonic tomb near the capital Cairo containing what may be the oldest and "most complete" mummy yet to be discovered in the country, the excavation team leader said on Thursday.

The 4,300-year-old mummy was found at the bottom of a 15-metre shaft in a recently uncovered group of fifth and sixth dynasty tombs near the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, Zahi Hawass, director of the team, told reporters.

The mummy, of a man named Hekashepes, was in a limestone sarcophagus that had been sealed in mortar.

Arab League, Egypt condemn deadly Israeli raid in West Bank

CAIRO, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Thursday condemned in the strongest terms an Israeli raid on Jenin city and Jenin refugee camp that killed at least nine Palestinians.

Aboul Gheit follows the development in the occupied territories with great concern and calls for the international community to protect the Palestinian people, said an Arab League statement.

The state of indifference encourages the occupying forces to commit more crimes under the leadership of a government with hardline plans, he added.
