Russia’s team tops medal standings of 2018 European Championships

GLASGOW /the United Kingdom/, August 12. /TASS/. Russia’s national team tops the overall medals standings of the 2018 European Championships, with 66 medals.

Russia has won 31 gold, 19 silver and 16 bronze medals to be awarded the European Championships Trophy, a 650mm tall and 400mm wide cup on a 22-carat gold footing.

Second is Britain’s team, with 71 medals, of which 24 are gold, 25 are silver, and 22 are bronze.

UK inquiry: Monks hid sex abuse to protect church reputation

London, Aug 9 (AP): A British inquiry has concluded that sexual abuse at two leading Roman Catholic schools in Britain was considerably higher than is reflected by conviction figures, with monks hiding allegations to protect the church's reputation.

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse issued a scathing report Thursday, saying that monks at Ampleforth in North Yorkshire and Downside in Somerset hid allegations of "appalling sexual abuse" against pupils as young as seven.

GLASGOW, August 4. /TASS/. Russia’s Kliment Kolesnikov was crowned as a champion at the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow on Saturday, breaking a world record in 50m backstroke with the result of 24.00 seconds.

Romania’s Robert-Andrei Glinta grabbed a silver medal (24.55), while Ireland’s Shane Ryan became a bronze medalist (24.64). Another Russian swimmer, Vladimir Morozov, came fourth (24.69).

UK blocks renewal of visas for Russian diplomatic mission in London - ambassador

MOSCOW, August 4. /TASS/. We could have applied ourselves better, says Kohli

Birmingham, Aug 4 (PTI) India skipper Virat Kohli today rued the lack of application and poor shot selection by his batsmen after their meek surrender paved the way for an England victory in the opening Test here.

The hosts drew first blood in the five-match series with a 31-run win at the Edgbaston.

Chasing 194, Kohli stood out again with a combative 51 but lacked support at the other end, as India were all out for 162.

Birmingham, Aug 4 (PTI) India suffered a heartbreaking 31-run loss to England as skipper Virat Kohli's heroics went in vain amid yet another abject batting capitulation in a riveting opening Test at the Edgbaston today.

Women paid 40 pct less than men in British workplace: study

LONDON, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Britain has one of the highest gender pay gaps in Europe, the House of Commons Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee said in a hard-hitting report on Thursday.

Rachel Reeves, the Member of Parliament who chairs the committee, said the study revealed that some companies have "obscene and entirely unacceptable" gender pay gaps of more than 40 percent.
