India: Three held over gangrape of 16-yr-old girl in Tripura, minister's son involved Aseem Chaudhary 24/10/2022 - 11:33

Agartala, Oct 24 (PTI) Three people were arrested in connection with the alleged gangrape of a 16-year-old girl in Tripura's Unakoti district, the police said.

Claiming that a state minister's son was involved in the incident, the opposition Congress and the CPI(M) demanded the arrest of all the accused, while the BJP dismissed the charge.

Agartala, May 14 (PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday said he has submitted his resignation to Governor SN Arya.

Deb made the announcement after meeting the governor at the Raj Bhavan here.

He went to New Delhi and met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda on Thursday for a confabulation on the party's affairs in the Northeastern state.

There have been rumours of infighting within the BJP's state unit.

Agartala, Mar 12 (PTI) A woman allegedly beheaded her 50-year-old husband and kept the blood-soaked head in a plastic bag at the family's temple in Tripura's Khowai district in the wee hours of Saturday, a police officer said.

While Khowai Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty said the reason behind the killing is not yet known, the couple's elder son said his mother has developed a psychological disorder recently and underwent treatment by a local occultist.

Agartala, Mar 11 (PTI) A special court in Tripura's Dhalai district sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl three years ago.

The convict, Niranjan Nagbanshi, has also been asked to pay a penalty of Rs 10,000.

Nagbanshi, a villager barged into the house of a nine-year girl Kamalpur sub-division, and raped her on August 18, 2019. Her parents were away during the incident.

Based on a complaint by the girl's family, the police had registered a case under various sections of the IPC and POCSO Act.

Independent candidate Md Irshad Hussain of Lilong assembly constituency told reporters that a public meeting as a part of his election campaign was in progress at around 1.30 PM when a large number of BJP supporters wearing party caps came and forcibly planted their party flags and posters.

Agartala, Feb 7 (PTI) BJP MLAs Sudip Roy Barman and Ashish Saha on Monday resigned from the Tripura assembly, and also gave up the membership of their party.

Roy Barman and Saha met Speaker Ratan Chakraborty and handed over their resignation letters.

Roy Barman told reporters that they will travel to New Delhi later in the day and finalise the future course of action amid speculation that they may join the Congress on Tuesday.

India: Tripura to breed endangered vultures

Agartala, Feb 6 (PTI) Tripura's forestry department is embarking on a project to breed the endangered vulture specie in Khowai district through program for vulture conservation and artificial breeding'.

The decision was taken after it was noticed that Khowai had higher concentration of vulture population, said officials who added that vultures would be brought in from other states to help in the artificial breeding.
