Woman tries to immolate self outside Bombay Mantralaya

Mumbai, Jan 18 (PTI) A 54-year-old woman allegedly tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire outside the Maharashtra secretariat here on Friday, police said.

According to police, she took the step due to debt burden.

"The woman, Sharda Kamble, a resident of Chembur, tried to set herself ablaze. But the police personnel, who were posted on duty there, stopped her from doing so," a police official said.

Canadian woman molested at 5-star hotel in Mumbai

Mumbai, Jan 17 (PTI) A 35-year-old Canadian woman was allegedly molested by an employee of a city-based five-star hotel during her stay there, a police official said Thursday.

Sumit Rao (32), a staff member of the hotel located in Juhu area, has been arrested in connection with the alleged incident that took place on January 5, he said.

India: No war, but still soldiers are dying on border: Bhagwat

Nagpur (Mah), Jan 17 (PTI) RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat lamented Thursday that though there was no war going on, soldiers were still dying on the country's borders.

This was happening because "we are not doing our job properly", he said at a function to mark silver jubilee of the Prahaar Samaaj Jagruti Sanstha here.

He said it was time to sacrifice life for the country before India gained freedom. After Independence, one had to do it on the borders when there was a war, the RSS chief said.

Bombay BEST union to withdraw stir, accepts 10-step pay hike formula

Mumbai, Jan 16 :  The BEST workers' union Wednesday agreed to withdraw its ongoing strike after accepting the '10-step' pay hike to be granted to them by way of an interim measure by the civic transport undertaking's management.

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) workers, its management and other parties concerned will now go for mediation to resolve their dispute.

India: Scolded for mobile addiction, girl hangs herself, dies

Mumbai, Jan 16 (PTI) A 14-year-old girl, who allegedly tried to kill herself after being admonished for watching videos on mobile phone, died at a hospital here after battling for life for three days, the police said Wednesday.

The family resides in Bhoiwada, central Mumbai. The police did not disclose the girl's name as she was minor.

Last Thursday the girl's mother chided her for watching videos on mobile phone all the time, a police official said.

India: BEST strike continues for 8th day

Mumbai, Jan 15 (PTI) The BEST bus strike in Mumbai continued for the eighth day on Tuesday as the agitating workers and the management of the civic-run transport undertaking failed to reach an agreement.

Over 32,000 employees of the various workers' unions of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) have been on strike since Tuesday last week and 3200-odd buses in its fleet are off the roads.

India based Italian firm loses Rs 130 crore to hackers in con job

Mumbai, Jan 14 (PTI) In perhaps the biggest such online heist, a Mumbai-based Italian firm lost Rs 130 crore to suspected hackers who allegedly convinced its local managers that the money was needed for an acquisition, police said Monday.

The hackers sent emails to the head of the Indian subsidiary of the firm through an email account, which looked similar to that of the group CEO, a police official said.

Indian farmers attack sugar factories in Maha over payment delay

Mumbai, Jan 13; PTI: Angry over delay in payments, farmers attacked offices of sugar factories in Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur districts of Maharashtra and set some of them ablaze, police said Sunday.

A group of protesters torched the office of Krishna Sugar Factory at Karad in Satara on Friday, a police official said.

Some important documents, computers and furniture were destroyed in the blaze, he said, adding that offences were registered against unidentified persons by the Karad rural police.

Call a meeting, end strike: Bombay HC tells BEST union

Mumbai, Jan 11 (PTI) The Bombay High Court on Friday asked the BEST Workers' Union to "take the first step" towards resolving its dispute with the state and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and end the civic bus service employees' strike, now in its fourth day.

The court also asked the union to hold a meeting of its office-bearers in the evening in a bid to break the stalemate.

Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni told the court that the Maharashtra government had set up a committee, headed by the chief secretary, to hold talks with the union.
