India: Babri demolition case: L K Advani deposes via video link

Lucknow, Jul 24 (PTI) Veteran BJP leader L K Advani on Friday recorded his statement before a special CBI court in the Babri mosque demolition case.

The statement of the 92-year-old former deputy prime minster was recorded through video conferencing in the court of special Judge SK Yadav in the presence of his counsel Vimal Kumar Srivastava, KK Mishra and Abhishek Ranjan, who were present in the court.

CBI lawyers Lalit Singh, P Chakravarti and RK Yadav were also present.

SC allows Rajasthan HC to pass orders on plea of Pilot, 18 MLAs

New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) The Supreme Court Thursday allowed the Rajasthan High Court to pronounce order on plea of 19 dissident Congress MLAs, including sacked deputy CM Sachin Pilot, against the Assembly Speaker's notice for initiating disqualification proceedings against them, but said that it would be subject to the outcome of the petition before the top court.

New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) Rajasthan Assembly Speaker C P Joshi on Thursday told the Supreme Court that the state high court has no jurisdiction to restrain him from conducting disqualification proceedings till July 24 against 19 dissident Congress MLAs, including sacked deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot.

India: SpiceJet to fly to United States

Mumbai, Jul 23 (PTI) Budget carrier SpiceJet on Thursday said it has been designated as the "Indian scheduled carrier," to operate flights to the US.

SpiceJet would be the first Indian budget carrier to operate services to the United States.

Currently, only the national carrier Air India is operating flights on India-US routes.

In a regulatory filing SpiceJet said it has been designated as an Indian scheduled carrier to operate on agreed services between between the two countries.

India: Contempt proceedings: SC issues notices to activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan

New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) The Supreme Court Wednesday issued notices to Attorney General K K Venugopal and advocate Prashant Bhushan on the contempt proceedings it has initiated against the activist-lawyer for his alleged derogatory tweets against the judiciary.

The apex court directed that Twitter INC be made a party, instead of Twitter India, to the contempt proceedings it has initiated suo motu (on its own) and asked the US-based firm to file a response in the matter.

India: Priyanka urges govt to provide all help to family of doctor who died of COVID-19

New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday urged the government to provide all assistance to the family of a doctor, who died after contracting COVID-19 while working with Delhi's National Health Mission.

Javed Ali, a contractual doctor with Delhi government's National Health Mission, died on Monday of coronavirus. Ali had been on the frontline in the fight against coronavirus since March.

India: Cong won't be scared by 'raid raj': Surjewala

Jaipur, Jul 22 (PTI) The Centre has created a 'raid raj' but the Congress won't be scared, the party's chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said on Wednesday after the Enforcement Directorate conducted searches at the home of Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's brother.

The Congress leader also reacted to the killing of a journalist in Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh and said there was 'gunda raj' and 'jungle raj' in the state.

India: COVID-19 tally climbs to 1,192,915

New Delhi, July 22 (PTI) India added?37,724 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday taking the country's tally to 1,192,915, while recoveries surged to 753,049 with 28,472 people having recuperated in a day, the highest so far, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The death toll due to the disease rose to 28,732? with 648 people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

India: Muzaffarpur shelter home: Rapist Brajesh Thakur moves HC against jail for life

New Delhi, Jul 20 (PTI) Brajesh Thakur, who was sentenced to life imprisonment till his last breath for sexually assaulting several girls in a shelter home in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, has approached the Delhi High Court challenging his conviction and jail term.

The high court is likely to take up this week his appeal seeking to set aside trial court's January 20 judgment convicting him in the case and February 11 order sentencing him to life imprisonment till his last breath.
