50 world leaders call for post-pandemic cooperation

UNITED NATIONS, May 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — World leaders called for resilience and cooperation after the pandemic recedes, during a UN video conference in which the United States, China and Russia did not participate.

About 50 leaders took part in the event on development financing, with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte saying in a recorded message that the goal must be to “leave no one behind.”

Huawei CFO Meng loses key court fight against extradition to United States

VANCOUVER/TORONTO (Reuters) - Huawei Technologies Co’s Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was dealt a setback by a Canadian court on Wednesday as she tries to avoid extradition to the United States to face bank fraud charges, dashing hopes for an end to her 18-month house arrest in Vancouver.

The ruling, which could further deteriorate relations between Ottawa and Beijing, elicited immediate strong reaction from China’s embassy in Canada, which said Canada is “accomplice to United States efforts to bring down Huawei and Chinese high-tech companies.”

Canada, U.S. agree to keep border closed to non-essential travel for another month

OTTAWA, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Tuesday that Canada and the United States have agreed once again to keep the cross-border closed to all non-essential travel for another month amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement means the bilateral agreement to ban non-essential travel will stay in place until June 21 even as parts of the two countries begin gradually reopening economies.

Canadian aerobatic jet crashes amid pandemic show; 1 dead

KAMLOOPS, British Columbia (AP) — A Canadian aerobatic jet crashed into a British Columbia neighborhood during a flyover intended to boost morale during the pandemic, killing one crew member, seriously injuring another and setting a house on fire. Video appeared to show the plane’s crew ejecting.

The crash left debris scattered across the neighborhood near the airport in the city of Kamloops, 260 miles (418 kilometers) northeast of Vancouver, on Sunday. The Snowbirds are Canada’s equivalent of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds or U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels.

Air Canada to lay off more than 20,000 because of pandemic

TORONTO (AP) — Canada’s largest airline said Friday it plans to lay off at least 20,000 employees because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Air Canada said the cuts affect more than half of the company’s 38,000 employees.

The airline said the pandemic has forced it to reduce scheduled flights by 95% and it doesn’t expect normal traffic to return anytime soon.

Canada honors six killed in helicopter crash with COVID-19 measures in place

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada on Wednesday honored six members of its armed forces killed last week in a helicopter crash in a ceremony where the prime minister and military officials donned black cloth masks and practiced physical distancing because of the coronavirus.

Trudeau announces funding for virtual health care, antibody research against COVID-19

OTTAWA, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced an allotment of 240 million Canadian dollars (about 168 million U.S. dollars) on Sunday for moving mental health and primary care services online during the COVID-19 crisis.

During his press conference on Sunday, Trudeau said a new mental health platform will provide strategies for managing stress with specific help for those from marginalized communities.

The money will include funding for marginalized communities and virtual primary care for patients who may not need to see a doctor in person.

Debris of missing Canadian NATO helicopter found off Greece: military source

30 April 2020; AFP: Debris from a Canadian military helicopter operating as part of a NATO surveillance force has been found in the sea between Greece and Italy, a Greek military source said Thursday.

The helicopter was attached to the Canadian frigate Fredericton, from which it had taken off for a patrol.

"Debris has been found in Italy's zone of control and intervention" in the Ionian Sea, the military source told AFP, specifying the wreckage belonged to the Canadian helicopter.

Canada's reopening won't depend on immunity: Trudeau

26 April 2020; AFP: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Saturday that Canada's approach to reopening its economy from the coronavirus shutdown would be "cautious" and not depend on the development of widespread immunity in the population.

"I don't think there are any of the plans that hinge on certain people or individuals being immune or having immunity to COVID-19," he said at a daily news briefing.
