Turks in Europe sue Greek MEP who ripped Turkish flag

BRUSSELS, 07 Feb 2020; AA: Turks living in Europe filed a criminal complaint against a Greek member of the European Parliament for ripping apart a Turkish flag, their union said on Thursday.

In a statement, the Union of International Democrats (UID) said it has demanded an investigation from prosecutors in Brussels over Ioannis Lagos’ provocation at the European Parliament.

The statement said the act violated the Article 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Europe to avoid taking Iran nuclear dispute to U.N., EU's top diplomat says

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union will extend indefinitely the time limit to resolve disputes in the Iran 2015 nuclear accord to avoid having to go to the U.N. Security Council or triggering new sanctions, the EU’s top diplomat said during a visit to Tehran.

Britain, France and Germany formally accused Iran on Jan. 14 of violating the terms of the 2015 arms control agreement aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear program. Violations could lead to the reimposing of U.N. sanctions lifted under the 2015 deal.

EU to overhaul process for admitting new members in bid to lift French veto

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Commission will propose changes to the system for letting new countries into the EU to give existing members more say, in a bid to mollify France which has vetoed expansion of the bloc to six countries in the Balkans.

In October, President Emmanuel Macron halted the process of admitting Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Albania, Bosnia and North Macedonia. The Commission hopes to persuade France to lift its objections before a Zagreb summit with the Balkan states in May.

EU's foreign policy chief to travel to Iran in de-escalation mission

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The head of the European Union’s foreign service, Josep Borrell, will travel to Iran next week to meet the country’s leaders in a bid to reduce tensions in the Middle East, the EU said in a statement on Sunday.

During in his trip on Monday and Tuesday, Borrell will meet Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Javad Zarif among others.

EU leaders remind Britain: No membership, no benefits

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The leaders of the European Union’s three institutions warned Britain on Friday that it cannot expect “the highest quality access to the single market” unless it adopts the bloc’s standards on environment, labor, taxation and state aid.

“Without being a member, you cannot retain the benefits of membership,” they said in an op-ed published by several European media on Friday, ahead of Britain’s exit from the EU at midnight in Brussels (2300 GMT).

Brexit: European Parliament overwhelmingly backs terms of UK’s exit

BRUSSELS/LONDON, Jan 30 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Members of the European Parliament have overwhelmingly backed the terms of the UK’s departure from the EU.

MEPs ratified the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement by 621 votes to 49 following an emotional debate in Brussels.

After the vote, MEPs marked the UK’s exit by singing Auld Lang Syne.

Several British MEPs said they hoped the UK would return one day although Eurosceptics, including the Brexit Party’s Nigel Farage, used their final speeches to tear into the EU.

Brexit deal cleared by EU Parliament; UK set to leave Friday

EU to assess Trump's Mideast peace plan: top EU diplomat

BRUSSELS, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) will study and assess the U.S. Middle East peace plan announced by the U.S. President Donald Trump, said Josep Borrell, EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, in a declaration on Tuesday.

The top EU diplomat pledged the EU's "firm and united commitment to a negotiated and viable two-state solution", reaffirming the EU's readiness for resuming negotiations between Israel and Palestine.
