India: Pilgrims from U'khand can visit Kedarnath from May 4: CM

Dehradun, May 2 (PTI) Pilgrims from Uttarakhand can visit Kedarnath and other Himalayan temples in the state from May 4, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said on Saturday.

As inter-district movement of people is being allowed with certain restrictions from May 4 especially in districts which fall in the green zone, pilgrims from the state can visit Kedarnath, Rawat said.

However, the chief minister appealed to the people to maintain social distancing while paying obeisance at the temples as their safety is of utmost importance.

India: Badrinath temple opening deferred

Gopeshwar, Apr 20 (PTI) The portals of Badrinath temple in Garhwal Himalayas, which were scheduled to open on April 30, will now open on May 15, a temple official said.

The decision to reschedule the opening of the temple gates was taken in view of circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic, Dharmadhikari of the Badrinath temple Bhuvan Chandra Uniyal said.

The portals of Badrinath were originally scheduled to open on April 30.

However, as per the revised schedule they will now open on May 15, Uniyal said.

India: Youths protest amid lockdown in Rishikesh

Rishikesh, Mar 23 (PTI) Defying the statewide lockdown in the wake of the coronavirus threat, a large number of people from Uttarakhand working outside the state held a demonstration after getting stranded here on way to their homes on Monday.

The protest was staged to demand transport facilities from the administration so that they could reach their destinations.

India: Gairsain to be Uttarakhand's summer capital

Gairsain, Mar 4 (PTI) Twenty years after Uttarakhand was granted statehood, an announcement was made in the state assembly on Wednesday to make Gairsain its summer capital.

Immediately after finishing his budget speech in the assembly here, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat made the announcement which partially fulfils a longstanding demand of the hill people and seeks to put an end to an emotive political issue simmering for the last 20 years.

India: U'khand govt mulls banning mobile phones in classrooms

Dehradun, Jan 14 (PTI) Uttarakhand government is contemplating a ban on mobile phones in college classrooms, if a majority of students feel it is a good move.

"A poll will soon be conducted in colleges of the state to take the opinion of students on a proposed ban on use of mobile phones in classrooms and if 51 per cent of them vote in favour of the ban, we will go ahead with it," Uttarakhand's Higher Education Minister Dhan Singh Rawat said.

India: The good people should enter politics to clean it: Rawat

Dehradun, Jan 11 (PTI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on Saturday said politics can be purged of its ills only when good people come out of their shells and join it.

"We often complain about politics becoming a dirty field. But it will continue to be so if good people don't come forward," Rawat said in his inaugural address at the Uttarakhand Young Leaders Conclave here.

"Politics cannot be cleaned of its ills unless good people don't come forward and enter it," the chief minister said.

India: Missing Delhi journalist found dead in Haridwar

Haridwar, Dec 9 (PTI) A journalist from Delhi, who had gone missing under mysterious circumstances, was found dead in this city of Uttarakhand on Monday, police said.

The body of 56-year-old Anuj Gupta with two veins in the wrist of one hand slit was recovered from Pathri Powerhouse on Gangnahar canal, Jwalapur police station in-charge Yogesh Dev said.

Gupta had gone missing on Saturday.

India: Woman from Karnataka raped in U'khand's Tehri

Tehri, Nov 30 (PTI) A woman from Karnataka was allegedly raped by a truck driver in Uttarakhand's Tehri district, a police official said on Saturday.

The 28-year-old woman ran away from her home in Karnataka after a fight with her family, Sub Inspector Kandisaur Surendra Singh Rawat said.

According to a complaint lodged by the woman with Kandisaur Police, she was raped by the truck driver who had given her a lift, Rawat said, adding that the driver later dumped her somewhere on the way.
