Sweden bans Huawei, ZTE from upcoming 5G networks

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Swedish regulators on Tuesday banned the use of telecom equipment from China's Huawei [HWT.UL] and ZTE 000063.SZ in its 5G network ahead of the spectrum auction scheduled for next month.

The Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) said here the setting of the licence conditions followed assessments by the Swedish Armed Forces and security service.

Sweden: Climate activist Greta Thunberg shows support for Biden in rare political tweet

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Teen climate-change fighter Greta Thunberg on Saturday showed support for Democrat Joe Biden, urging voters concerned about the environment to make their voices heard in the U.S. presidential election.

The Swedish 17-year-old said in a tweet that she never engages in party politics, but that “the upcoming US elections is above and beyond all that”.

“From a climate perspective it’s very far from enough and many of you of course supported other candidates. But, I mean…you know…damn! Just get organized and get everyone to vote #Biden,” she wrote.

Sweden: Panel to announce 2020 Nobel Prize for chemistry

STOCKHOLM (AP) — The 2020 Nobel Prize for chemistry is being announced Wednesday, an award that has frequently honored work which led to practical applications in wide use today — such as last year’s win for the brains behind the lithium-ion battery.

A panel at the Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm will announce the recipient some time after 11:45 a.m. (0945 GMT; 5:45 a.m. EDT).

SWEDEN: Black hole discoveries win 2020 Nobel Prize for Physics

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Britain’s Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel of Germany and U.S. scientist Andrea Ghez won the 2020 Nobel Prize for Physics for their discoveries about one of the most exotic phenomena in the universe, the black hole, the award-giving body said on Tuesday.

Penrose, professor at the University of Oxford, won half the prize for his work using mathematics to prove that black holes are a direct consequence of the general theory of relativity.

Sweden registers highest proportion of drug-related deaths in EU: report

STOCKHOLM, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Sweden has the highest proportion of drug-related deaths in the European Union, according to Swedish Television on Friday, citing the latest European Drug Report published by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).

According to the report, in 2018 Sweden registered 81 cases of drug-related deaths per 1 million citizens aged 15 to 64. That is nearly four times higher than the EU average of 22.3 deaths per 1 million citizens.

Finnish cruise ship evacuated after running aground in Baltic sea

STOCKHOLM, Sept 21 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A Finnish passenger cruise ship ran aground off the island of Aland in the Baltic Sea, the cruise line said, with emergency services adding they were preparing to evacuate the vessel.

The ship was headed towards Stockholm from Turku in Finland and ran aground around 12.50am local time outside the city of Mariehamn on the autonomous Finnish island of Aland near the Swedish coast.

Riots in Sweden after Quran burning by far-right activists

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Far-right activists burned a Quran in the southern Swedish city of Malmo, sparking riots and unrest after more than 300 people gathered to protest, police said Saturday.

Rioters set fires and threw objects at police and rescue services Friday night, slightly injuring several police officers and leading to the detention of about 15 people.

The violence followed the burning Friday afternoon of a Quran, near a predominantly migrant neighborhood, that was carried out by far-right activists and filmed and posted online, according to the TT news agency.
