India: Man in Odisha gets 10-yr jail for raping minor

Phulbani, Nov 19 (PTI) A court in Odisha's Kandhamal district sentenced a 32-year-old man to 10 years of imprisonment on Friday for abducting and raping a girl four years ago.

Phulbani Pocso judge Bhaskar Chandra Sahu also imposed a penalty of Rs 18,000 on Achyuta Sahu.

The man had kidnapped the minor near her house on the pretext of buying her sweets from a market on August 3, 2017, and took her to an under-construction building and raped her, according to the prosecution.

India: Odisha man gets 14-year jail term for raping minor

Cuttack (Odisha), Nov 12 (PTI) An Odisha court on Friday sentenced a 60-year-old man to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a girl seven years ago.

A POCSO court in Cuttack also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Ajay Samal and directed the District Legal Services Authority to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the rape survivor, who is an orphan.

India: BJD to protest across Odisha against Central gov over price rise

Bhubaneswar, Oct 30 (PTI) The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha Saturday announced a series of protests across the state targeting the BJP-led Central government over the spiralling rise in the prices of fuel and other essential commodities.

This was announced by party spokespersons and senior MLAs- P K Deb, Atanu S Nayak and Pramila Mallick - at a press meet here.

India: BJP workers clash with cops in Odisha, 4 injured

Cuttack, Oct 22 (PTI) At least four persons, including three police personnel, were on Friday injured in a clash between security personnel and BJP workers on the premises of a police station in Odisha's Cuttack district, a senior officer said.

The BJP workers were staging a protest outside Narasinghapur police station over detention of three party members when the situation turned volatile as some women agitators sought to lock its doors, the officer said.

The police then used batons to disperse the crowd.

India: 3 Naxals gunned down in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Oct 12 (PTI) At least three suspected Maoists, including two women, were gunned down in an exchange of fire in Tulasi Forest Range in Odisha's Malkangiri district, a top police officer said on Tuesday.

Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint team of the special operation group and Malkangiri district voluntary force had launched a combing operation in the area, DGP Abhay said.

India: Odisha BJP MLA escapes bomb attack

Keonjhar (Odisha), Oct 10 (PTI) BJP's chief whip in the Odisha assembly Mohan Charan Majhi had a narrow escape on Sunday when two unidentified miscreants hurled bombs at his car in Keonjhar district, police said.

Majhi and his security officer were not injured in the incident but the lawmaker's vehicle was partially damaged, a senior officer said.

The blast occurred near Mandua area under the Keonjhar Town Police Station limits when the saffron party's legislator was returning home after attending a labour union meeting, he said.

India: Odisha industries facing coal crisis, seek CM's intervention

Bhubaneswar, Oct 9 (PTI) The Utkal Chamber Of Commerce & Industry Ltd (UCCI), an association of industries, has urged the Odisha government to ensure adequate supply of coal to state-based industries which are facing an acute shortage of dry fuel to run their units.

In a letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the UCCI Friday said: "We would like to bring to your kind attention the current acute coal shortage situation in the state with many units having stock out or critical coal stock seriously affecting the viable operation of the industrial units."

India: Forced labour, cyber crimes zoom up in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Sep 19 (PTI) The highest number of victims who were trafficked for forced labour last year were from Odisha, which also saw cyber crimes shoot up by a whopping 30 per cent amid the coronavirus lockdown, according to NCRB report.

The state registered one of the highest rates of murders and attempts to murder in the country, as well as the biggest crime rate per lakh population in cases of hit and run, dacoity and criminal intimidation, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) said in its latest report.

India: Man gets 10 years RI for raping minor girl in Odisha

Phulbani , Aug 27 (PTI) A court in Odisha's Kandhamal district has sentenced a 32-year-old man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl in 2014.

Balliguda Additional district judge Bhaskar Chandra Sahu Thursday convicted the man and sentenced him to jail for 10 years.

The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict.

According to the prosecution, the man who hails from Balliguda had called the girl, a resident of a nearby village, to work with him in a field.
