Nepal seeks review of Gurkha recruitment deal with Britain

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Nepal wants to review a military deal allowing its citizens to be enlisted in the British army, before a planned recruitment of Nepali women in the Brigade of Gurkhas for the first time in two centuries, the Himalayan country’s foreign minister said.

It is not clear how many Gurkha women Britain plans to enlist, but the first Gurkha women could begin their training in the British army in 2020, according to British media.

Britain has been enlisting Gurkhas, a tribe from Nepal’s Himalayan foothills known for their fierce combat abilities, since 1815.

Nepal, China Trade Grows After Reopening Of Border Point

KATHMANDU, Dec 2 (NNN-NEPALNEWS) – Trade has been on the rise between Nepal and China, after the reopening of the Tatopani-Zhangmu border point, according to data from Nepal’s Department of Customs.

The border point had been out of service since Nepal’s deadly earthquake in 2015, before it was resumed in May this year.

Nepali Prime Minister Inaugurates China Funded Hydro Project In Nepal

KATHMANDU, Nov 19 (NNN-NEPALNEWS) – Nepal’s Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, inaugurated a China-funded 60 MW Hydro-power Project, which had started producing electricity recently.

Upper Trishuli 3A Hydro-power Project, developed by Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the state-owned power production and utility body, and constructed by China Gezhouba Group Company, is located at the border of Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts.

Chinese Medical Team Provide Free Eye Surgeries To Nepali Patients

KATHMANDU, Nov 18 (NNN-NEPALNEWS) – Chinese medical team, provided free cataract surgeries, to over 50 Nepali patients, in the last two days here, as part of programmes to strengthen medical cooperation between the two countries.

The medical team, under China’s Shenzhen Chaoqing Charity, conducted the surgeries, the fifth of its kind, at the Manmohan Memorial Hospital on Saturday and Sunday, and members of the federal parliament and other Nepali officials joined the Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Hou Yanqi, to visit the patients at the ward on Sunday evening (last night).

Nepali climber claims new record for 14 highest peaks

29 October 2019; AFP: A Nepali mountaineer on Tuesday smashed the speed record for summiting the world's 14 highest peaks, racing up all "8000ers" in just six months and six days, organisers said.

The previous record for the 14 mountains above 8,000 metres (around 26,250 feet) -- completed by Nirmal Purja at 8.59 am (1259 GMT) on Tuesday -- was almost eight years.

43 people die in Nepal floods

Kathmandu, Jul 14 (PTI) At least 43 people, including 18 women, were killed and 20 others injured in floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains in various parts of Nepal, police said.

Twenty four people have been reported missing in the rain-related incidents that displaced settlements and disrupted vehicular traffic, the Himalayan Times reported on Sunday.

Heavy rainfall since Thursday hit more than 25 districts in the hills as well as the southern plains of the country, affecting 10,385 households.

Floods, landslides leave scores dead across Nepal, India

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Police in Nepal say flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall have killed at least 43 people in the past few days, with more deaths reported across the Himalayan border in India.

At least 24 others are missing in Nepal, either swept by swollen rivers or buried by mudslides since rains began pounding the region Friday. Roads and highways have been blocked in parts of Nepal while communication towers are knocked down.

9 killed, 5 injured in jeep accident in western Nepal

KATHMANDU, June 17 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed and five others seriously injured when a passenger jeep skidded off road in Bajhang district of western Nepal on Monday afternoon, local authorities said.

Ram Bahadur Sarki, the assistant district chief of Bajhang, told

Xinhua via phone that nine dead bodies were recovered from the crash site.

"We are now preparing to airlift seriously injured people to hospitals based in Kathmandu for treatment," he said.

Deaths rise as Nepal issues more permits for Mount Everest

NAMCHE, Nepal (AP) — Nepal’s reluctance to limit the number of permits it issues to scale Mount Everest has contributed to dangerous overcrowding, with inexperienced climbers impeding others and causing deadly delays, seasoned mountaineers said.

During the short period this season when the weather was clear enough to attempt the summit, climbers were crammed crampon-to-crampon above South Col’s sharp-edged ridge, all clipped onto a single line of rope, trudging toward the top of the world and risking death as each minute ticked by.
