LONDON (AP) — Prime Minister Theresa May’s announcement that she will leave 10 Downing Street has set off a fierce competition to succeed her as Conservative Party leader — and as the next prime minister. These are some of the most prominent names on a list of contenders that is expected to grow in the coming days.

EU official lauds May for showing courage

LONDON (AP) — European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker says that he considers British Prime Minister Theresa May as “a woman of courage for whom he has great respect.” 

European Union spokeswoman Mina Andreeva said that Juncker watched May’s announcement that she will step down as Conservative Party leader on June 7 “with emotion” and added it was “without personal joy.”

She said Juncker will “equally respect and establish working relations” with May’s successor. Britain currently faces an Oct. 31 deadline to leave the EU.

WWII plane rescued from boneyard to join D-Day anniversary

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Filled with paratroopers, a U.S. warplane lumbered down an English runway in 1944 to spearhead the World War II D-Day invasion with a message for Adolf Hitler painted in bright yellow across its nose: “That’s All, Brother.”

Seventy-five years later, in a confluence of history and luck, that plane is again bound for the French coast for what could be the last great commemoration of the Allied battle to include D-Day veterans, many of whom are now in their 90s.

Huawei launches 5G smartphone in Britain

Chinese researchers develop "bio-glue" for fast wound repairing

LONDON, May 14 (Xinhua): Chinese researchers have demonstrated in animal experiments that a light-activated adhesive gel can rapidly seal wounds to arteries and the heart, which could have potential applications in surgery in the future, according to a study published online on Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications.

Uncontrolled bleeding following trauma or during surgery is a major cause of death and it is difficult to seal these wounds without sutures.

Russian embassy in London urges publication of Salisbury probe findings

LONDON, May 14. /TASS/: The Russian embassy in London has addressed the British authorities with fresh a reminder it is necessary to publish the results of the probe into the poisoning of former GRU Colonel Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia. LONDON, May 5 (Xinhua): Britain's participation in the International Horticultural Exhibition in Beijing will help strengthen Britain-China partnership on green development and contribute more to achieving a greener future in the world, said a senior British official.

Antonia Romeo, Permanent Secretary of Britain's Department for International Trade, told Xinhua in an interview that Britain has been "enthusiastic" in its contributions to the expo.

Britain's Duchess of Sussex gives birth to a boy

LONDON, May 6 (Xinhua): Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has given birth to a boy, the Duke of Sussex announced here on Monday.

Prince Harry said the baby was delivered at 05:26 BST and both the mother and baby were doing "incredibly well."

He added that they were "absolutely thrilled" and they were still thinking about names for the infant.

"This little thing is absolutely to die for, so I'm just over the moon," the new father said.

The Buckingham Palace said the baby weighed about 3.2 kg and the royal family have been informed.

New technology could reduce solar cell manufacturing costs

LONDON, May 3 (Xinhua): Researchers have found a new way to design solar cells that could drive down manufacturing costs and even make them more efficient, says a study released on Friday by the University of Sheffield.

A team of researchers from the university and the technology company Power Roll demonstrated that by coating opposing walls of micro-grooves with different electrical contacts, and then filling the grooves with a solution-processable semiconductor, it was possible to create a new type of back-contacted solar cell.
