India: Internet services suspended across Assam till Monday

Guwahati, Dec 14 (PTI) Internet services across Assam will remain suspended till December 16 to prevent alleged misuse of social media in disturbing peace and to maintain law and order in the state, officials said on Saturday.

Suspension of internet services have been extended for another 48 hours keeping in view the prevailing law and order situation in the state, additional chief secretary (home and political department) Sanjay Krishna told PTI.

India: Tea growers feel pinch of Assam protests, fear less production, sales

Kolkata, Dec 14 (PTI) Tea growers in Assam have started feeling the pinch of the ongoing protests with partial disruption in production at many gardens and sale of the crop at the Guwahati auction centre being hampered, industry insiders said on Saturday.

Transportation of the produce has also been affected due to the ongoing stir, they said.

India: Stones thrown at Assam police chief's convoy in Guwahati

Guwahati, Dec 12 (PTI) Stones were thrown at Assam Police chief Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta's convoy on Thursday when he was touring the city, ravaged by violent protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The cavalcade was on the Guwahati-Shillong Road near Christian Basti where it was attacked. Stones were thrown at several vehicles in the convoy that was on its way from the Secretariat.

Guwahati, Dec 13 (PTI) Roads in Guwahati have virtually become impossible to navigate as street fires set up by people protesting against the contentious amended Citizenship Act turned the city's sky red.

Normal life in the city has been paralysed to the core as protesters are defying curfew and venturing out on the streets.

India-Japan summit in Guwahati postponed due to massive protest ocer CAB

New Delhi, Dec 13 (PTI) India announced on Friday that the annual summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe, which was scheduled to be held in Guwahati, has been postponed.

Abe was scheduled to arrive in Guwahati on Sunday on a three-day India visit to hold summit talks with Modi.

"With reference to the proposed visit of Japanese PM @AbeShinzo to India, both sides have decided to defer the visit to a mutually convenient date in the near future," Spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

India: Efforts to help stranded passengers in Guwahati

Guwahati, Dec 12 (PTI) Efforts were being made on Friday to help passengers stranded at the airport, railway station and inter-state bus terminals here, an official said.

Hundreds of passengers were stranded at these places due to the indefinite curfew in the city following violent protests against the amended Citizenship Act.

India: AASU has filed petition challenging amended Citizenship

Guwahati, Dec 13 (PTI) All Assam Students Union(AASU) has on Friday filed a petition in Supreme Court challenging the amended Citizenship Act, its chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said.

Bhattacharya, who was addressing a meeting here amidst the indefinite curfew, hit out at the BJP top leadership for "betraying" the people of Assam.

India: People defy curfew, police open fire as Assam turns war zone

Guwahati, Dec 12 (PTI) Thousands of people defied curfew in Guwahati on Thursday and took to the streets, prompting police to open fire, even as protests against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill intensified in Assam.

Police said they had to open fire in Lalung Gaon area in Guwahati after stones were hurled by protestors. The agitators claimed that at least four persons were injured in the shooting.

India: Curfew imposed in Guwahati

Guwahati, Dec 11 (PTI) Curfew was imposed in Guwahati in Assam on Wednesday to control deteriorating law and order situation, amid massive protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, officials said.

The curfew was imposed at 6.15 pm and will be in place till 7 am on Thursday, Assam Police Director General Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta told PTI.

India: AASU to move SC against CAB

Guwahati, Dec 10 (PTI) The All Assam Students Union (AASU), which is spearheading the anti-CAB protests in the state, on Tuesday said that it will move the Supreme Court against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019.

The AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya slamming the BJP-led government at the Centre for thrusting the contentious piece of legislation on the people of the North East said it will not be accepted "under any circumstance".
