Argentina to hold general election in October

BUENOS AIRES, March 17 (NNN-XINHUA) — Argentina will hold the general election for the 2023-2027 presidential term on Oct. 22, the National Electoral Chamber announced.

Mandatory primary elections are scheduled for Aug 13. Political parties can present one list of primary candidates and voting is mandatory for citizens.

Primary candidates must obtain at least 1.5 percent of the total votes in order to be eligible for the October election.

Argentina: Chilean President wants free elections in Venezuela next year

BUENOS AIRES, Jan 25 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font called for free elections in Venezuela and said he was willing to sponsor dialogue between the administration of President Nicolás Maduro and the opposition. He also said he hoped Venezuela would soon once again participate in multilateral forums.

During his speech at the VII Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), Boric also called for the release of political opponents still detained in Nicaragua.

Argentina and China formalize currency swap deal

BUENOS AIRES, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Argentina and China have formalized the expansion of a currency swap deal, allowing the South American country to increase its depleted foreign currency reserves, the Argentine central bank said on Sunday.

Argentina's government needs to rebuild reserves to cover trade costs and future debt repayments, and more reserves are a key objective of a major debt deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

President Alberto Fernandez announced the deal in November last year and said at the time it was worth $5 billion.

Huge crowds welcome Argentina team after World Cup victory

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Thousands of fans lined up in the middle of the night to try to get a glimpse of the Argentina soccer team that won one of the greatest World Cup finals of all time ahead what is scheduled to be a day of celebrations in Buenos Aires.

Members of the team, led by captain Lionel Messi, were all smiles as they descended from the plane in Ezeiza, right outside Argentina’s capital, shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday onto a red carpet that had been rolled out for the squad.

Argentina erupts in joy after team reaches World Cup final

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — The streets of Argentina turned into a party Tuesday as the national team beat Croatia by a comfortable 3-0 and earned this soccer-crazed South American country a spot in the World Cup final.

Fans poured onto the streets of the capital of Buenos Aires as soon as the match ended, with people waving Argentina flags out of their cars while others jumped and sang in joy amid a sea of wearing the national team’s jersey.

Argentine airlines confirm more flights to Qatar

BUENOS AIRES, Dec 12 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The Aerolineas Argentinas company confirmed the departure of another flight for Qatar taking fans of the Argentine soccer team to support it in the semifinal match against Croatia.    

The AR1146 will leave from Ezeiza International Airport at 14:55, local time, and will arrive in Doha on Monday at 17:05.

Moreover, it announced that other flights are scheduled (Dec.12 and 16) in case the Argentine team manages to advance to the cup final, slated for Dec.18.

The flights last about 20 hours and stop over in Rome, Italy .

Argentina signs deal with US regarding undeclared taxpayers’ assets

BUENOS AIRES, Dec 7 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Argentina’s Superminister of Economy, Industry, and Agriculture Sergio Massa signed an agreement with US Ambassador Marc Stanley for the automatic exchange between the two countries of information about undeclared assets owned by local taxpayers.

The deal is expected to allow Argentina’s tax bureau AFIP to access information on funds estimated to be around US$ 100 billion leaked to the United States by Argentine fiscal residents to avoid taxation.

Argentina Saw 88 Percent Year-On-Year Inflation Last Month

BUENOS AIRES, Nov 16 (NNN-TELAM) – Argentina registered 88 percent year-on-year inflation last month, with prices rising 6.3 percent for an accumulated 76.6 percent spike in prices, so far this year, the National Statistics and Census Institute (INDEC) said yesterday.

The goods and services that saw the biggest jump in price, year over year, were “clothing and footwear,” with a 121.5 percent increase; “restaurants and hotels,” with a 105.2 percent rise; and “food and non-alcoholic beverages,” with a 91.6 percent increase, the INDEC said.

World Cup: 6,000 Argentine fans banned from stadiums in Qatar

BUENOS AIRES, Nov 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Violent fans involved in illegal associations and even those in debt for food dues are part of a list of 6,000 Argentines who will not be allowed to enter World Cup stadiums in Qatar, the Buenos Aires city government said.

“The violent ones are here and in Qatar. We want to bring peace back to football and that the violent ones are outside the stadiums,” the city’s Justice and Security Minister Marcelo D’Alessandro said in an interview on a local radio station.

Former Argentinean president charged for alleged espionage

BUENOS AIRES, Nov 2 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Federal prosecutor Franco Picardi charged former Argentine President Mauricio Macri for allegedly being responsible for a systematic plan of illegal espionage during his government (2015-2019), revealed today newspaper Pagina 12.    

According to the newspaper, the former president was accused of monitoring, through the Federal Intelligence Agency (AFI), people like the then Senator Cristina Fernandez and her sister Florencia Macri.
