Argentine president asks for "orderly" resolution of debt crisis

BUENOS AIRES, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Argentine President Alberto Fernandez called on Sunday for an "orderly" resolution of the country's debt crisis while seeking talks on debt restructuring.

"We need an agreement that will allow Argentina to get back on its feet and not fall down again. This is non-negotiable," Fernandez said at the 138th ordinary session of the National Congress.

Fernandez said the country's public debt has hit "a record amount" and almost 49 billion U.S. dollars are due in 2020 alone. "To this we must add 14.838 billion dollars in interest on this debt."

Argentina, IMF say their talks on new debt agreement “fruitful”

BUENOS AIRES, Feb 23 (NNN-Xinhua) — Argentina and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced that progress has been made in their talks about a new agreement to address the South American country’s debt.

The Saturday announcement came after a meeting between Argentine Economy Minister Martin Guzman and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on the sidelines of a G20 meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Moscow hopes Argentine president or vice president will visit Russia this year — diplomat

USHUAIA, February 14. /TASS/: The Russian authorities hope that Argentine President Alberto Fernandez or Vice President Cristina Kirchner will visit Russia this year, Russia's Ambassador to Buenos Aires Dmitry Feoktistov told reporters on Thursday.

"We have invited Alverto Fernandez and Cristina Kirchner to visit Russia. I hope it will happen already this year," Feoktistov said. A possible visit is currently being discussed, he added.

Guaidó’s ambassador has her diplomatic credentials withdrawn by Argentine government

BUENOS AIRES, Jan 8 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — In a blow to Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, Argentina’s government said on Tuesday it did not recognize him as his nation’s interim president and had revoked the credentials of his representative in Buenos Aires.

The new administration of Argentina’s center-left President Alberto Fernandez sent a letter to Elisa Trotta Gamus, who represented Guaido in Argentina, to notify her that her “special mission” in Argentina had been terminated.

Australian bushfire cloud visible in Chile and Argentina

SANTIAGO (Chile), Jan 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The cloud of smoke caused by raging bushfires in Australia has been spotted more than 12,000km away in Chile and Argentina, weather authorities in the South American countries said.

In the early hours “the effect was seen in the sun through red tones. This effect was produced by a cloud of smoke that comes from the fires,” Chile meteorology chief, Patricio Urra, said.

The cloud has risen to 6,000m above sea level and there is no meteorological reason for it to fall back to Earth, said Urra.

It poses no threat to Chileans.

Morales and MAS leadership meet for elections in Bolivia

Morales, in Argentina as a political refugee, exchange with MAS leaders in the nine departments of Bolivia, who in addition to addressing aspects related to elections will discuss holding a congress of that political formation to name its candidates.

Argentina approves measures aimed at ending economic crisis

BUENOS AIRES, Dec 24 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Argentina’s government approved a package of emergency measures aimed at lifting the South American country out of its worst economic crisis in years.

Argentina is in a recession caused by a currency collapse that struck 18 months ago.

Poverty levels in the country of 44 million still top 40 per cent – in a country that was among the world’s wealthiest in the early 20th century.
