India: BJP leader among 2 held with illicit liquor worth Rs 10 lakh

Pilibhit (UP), Apr 14 (PTI) A BJP leader was among two persons allegedly arrested with illicit liquor worth Rs 10 lakh in the Barkheda police station area of this Uttar Pradesh district on Friday.

According to a statement issued by the Superintendent of Police (SP), a team from Barkheda Police Station, along with the joint team of the excise department recovered a large amount of illicit liquor from a vehicle and arrested two accused.

India opens new investigation into BBC in widening crackdown

NEW DELHI, April 13 (Reuters) - India's financial crime-fighting agency has opened an investigation into alleged violations of foreign exchange rules by the BBC, a source told Reuters on Thursday, months after tax officials searched the broadcaster's Mumbai and Delhi offices.

The tax raids in February had come close on the heels of the release of a BBC documentary about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership of the state of Gujarat during riots in 2002. At least 1,000 people were killed in the riots, most of them Muslims.

India: Man kills self after strangulating mother to death

Kanpur:  A newly married man killed his mother before hanging himself to death allegedly due to a family dispute, police said on Thursday.

They said that 28-year-old Vivek Verma alias Nikhil running coaching classes was found hanging with a ceiling hook on Wednesday.

While 60- year old Rajkumari Verma was lying dead on the floor of their house at R K Nagar under the Nazirabad police station area.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Pramod Kumar told PTI the exact reason behind the suspected murder-suicide case was yet to be ascertained.

Hibatullah Akhundzada, an Islamic scholar, almost never appears in public and hardly ever leaves the Taliban heartland in southern Kandahar province.

He surrounds himself with other religious scholars and allies who oppose education and work for women. Only one known photo of him, years old, exists.

4 firefighters die in garment factory blaze in Pakistan

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Four firefighters died and nearly a dozen others were injured after a massive fire broke out in a garment factory in the southern Pakistan port city of Karachi, rescue officials and police said Thursday.

The cause of the blaze, which ripped through the factory Wednesday night and eventually caused it to collapse, was not immediately known, police said. Earlier, heavy gray smoke suddenly rose from the factory. Firefighters had almost extinguished the blaze when the collapse occurred.

Pakistan: Govt increases BISP allocation from Rs250 bn to Rs400 bn

ISLAMABAD, Apr 12 (APP):Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety and Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Ms. Shazia Marri was informed that during the last one year, the government has increased the budgetary allocation of Benazir Income Support Programme from Rs 250 billion to Rs 400 billion which is 60% increase in this budget.

She was presiding over a meeting to review the progress of BISP initiatives at its HQ on Wednesday.

Musk says unaware why Twitter India pulled posts on BBC documentary critical of Modi

BENGALURU, April 12 (Reuters) - Elon Musk said on Wednesday that he did not know "what exactly happened" when Twitter took down content related to a documentary critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year, adding that some rules related to social media content were "quite strict" in India.

In January, India ordered the blocking of a BBC documentary which questioned Modi's leadership during the 2002 Gujarat riots, saying that even sharing of any clips via social media was barred.
