Hurricane Rick edges closer to Mexican coast north of Acapulco

MEXICO CITY, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Hurricane Rick edged slowly closer to Mexico's Pacific coast on Sunday, expected to unleash heavy rains north of the beach resort of Acapulco late in the evening, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Rick was packing maximum sustained winds near 85 miles (140 km) per hour with strong gusts as it moved northward at about 3 miles (6 km) per hour.

The storm was located 130 miles (210 km) south of the beach city of Zihuatanejo in Guerrero state.

Over 2,000 migrants march out of southern city in Mexico

TAPACHULA, Mexico (AP) — Over 2,000 migrants, mainly Central Americans, began walking out of a city in southern Mexico on Saturday where they have essentially been trapped.

The migrants walked along a highway leading west and north toward the U.S. border, and pushed past a line of state police who were trying to stop them.

There were minor scuffles, but the migrants continued on their way. Police, immigration agents and National Guard have broken up smaller attempts at similar breakouts earlier this year.

Tropical Storm Rick strengthens into hurricane off Mexico's Pacific coast

MEXICO CITY, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Rick strengthened into a hurricane on Saturday off Mexico's Pacific coast and is expected to gain force throughout the day, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Rick was moving north-northwest at about 7 miles (11 km) per hour with maximum sustained winds near 80 miles (130 km) per hour and strong gusts. The storm was located 205 miles (335 km) south of the beach city of Zihuatanejo in Guerrero state.

Shots fired in robbery attempt near Mexico City airport, suspect dead

MEXICO CITY, Oct 15 (Reuters) - An attempted robbery turned into a shootout close to Mexico City's international airport on Friday morning in which an alleged attacker was killed and two men were injured, according to security officials.

Mexico City Police said they believed that at least one gunman on a motorcycle opened fire on a vehicle carrying two passengers, one of whom - a bodyguard - fired shots in return, fatally wounding the alleged robber.

Flights and other operations were not affected by the incident, according to the airport's media office.

Pamela hits Mexico’s Pacific coast at hurricane force

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Pamela hit Mexico’s Pacific coast just north of the port city of Mazatlan Wednesday at hurricane force, bringing high winds and rain to the city.

Pamela regained hurricane strength just before it hit the coast 40 miles (65 kms) north of Mazatlan, which also serves as a resort for Mexican tourists.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Pamela had maximum winds of about 75 mph (120 kph) at landfall, though it is expected to quickly weaken as it moves inland.

Blinken meets Lopez Obrador to reboot U.S.-Mexico ties, forge new security accord

U.S. border agents briefly detain 14 Mexican soldiers in El Paso

MEXICO CITY, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Fourteen Mexican soldiers were detained early Saturday morning for several hours by U.S. border agents after they crossed into El Paso, Texas, from Mexico's Ciudad Juarez, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)said.

"Just after midnight today CBP officers working at the Bridge of the America's international crossing in El Paso noted two Mexican military vehicles crossing the boundary and entering the U.S.," the CBP told Reuters in an emailed statement.

MEXICO CITY, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday urged the United Nations to intervene in Haiti, saying the Caribbean nation is racked by instability, violence and "total disorder."

"Something has to be done and the UN is taking too long here," Lopez Obrador told reporters during his daily press conference at the National Palace in Mexico City.
