Military coup: Saudis, UAE join US, UK in urging restoration of Sudan govt

WASHINGTON, Nov 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which enjoy close ties with Sudan’s military, joined the United States and Britain in urging the restoration of the civilian government.

“We call for the full and immediate restoration of its civilian-led transitional government and institutions,” said a joint statement released by the US State Department.

“We encourage the release of all those detained in connection with recent events and the lifting of the state of emergency,” the statement said.

U.S. calls on nations to set bold targets for offshore wind

Nov 4 (Reuters) - A top Biden administration official on Thursday challenged nations to join the United States in setting aggressive goals to expand electricity production from offshore wind.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland issued the call during an appearance at the United Nations climate change conference in Glasgow.

The administration of President Joe Biden has moved swiftly this year to support a nascent offshore wind industry in the United States, a key part of its plan to decarbonize the power sector by 2035 and address global warming.

USA: Moderna lowers forecast for 2021 COVID-19 vaccine deliveries

(AP) --- Moderna is scaling back expectations for the number of COVID-19 vaccine deliveries it expects to make this year and the revenue it will record from them.

Longer delivery lead times for exports and a temporary impact from expanding its fill-finish capacity may shift some deliveries to early 2022, the drugmaker said Thursday. The company now expects full-year, 2021 product sales of between $15 billion and $18 billion.

That’s down from a prediction for $20 billion in sales that it made in August.

US mandates vaccines or tests for big companies by Jan. 4

(AP) --- Tens of millions of Americans who work at companies with 100 or more employees will need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Jan. 4 or get tested for the virus weekly under government rules issued Thursday.

The new requirements, which were first previewed by President Joe Biden in September, will apply to about 84 million workers at medium and large businesses, although it is not clear how many of those employees are unvaccinated.

US, UK, Saudi Arabia, UAE call for immediate restoration of Sudan civilian-led rule

04 Nov 2021; MEMO: The United States, Britain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates yesterday called for the "full and immediate" restoration of the civilian-led transitional institutions including the government in Sudan.

"We endorse the international community's serious concern with the situation in Sudan. We call for the full and immediate restoration of its civilian-led transitional government and institutions," the four nations, known as the Quad of Sudan, said in a joint statement released by the US Department of State.

New US ambassador to Israel pledges to oppose BDS

04 Nov 2021; MEMO: The new US ambassador to Israel has pledged to fight the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, support the Abraham Accords, strengthen bonds with the occupation state and replenish its Iron Dome missile defence system.

Thomas R Nides was confirmed in the role on Wednesday. He served as deputy US secretary of state for management and resources under Hillary Clinton from 2011 to 2013.

USA: Stocks wobble on Wall Street, hovering around record highs

(AP) --- Stocks wobbled on Wall Street Wednesday as investors looked over another big batch of earnings reports from U.S. companies.

Wall Street is also looking ahead to an announcement in the afternoon from the Federal Reserve, which is expected to give its outlook on inflation and the economy and also detail how it plans to wind down its monthly bond purchases.

US government works to ‘cocoon’ old nuclear reactors

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Costs to clean up a massive nuclear weapons complex in Washington state are usually expressed in the hundreds of billions of dollars and involve decades of work.

But one project on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation is progressing at a much lower price.

The federal government is moving forward with the “cocooning” of eight plutonium production reactors at Hanford that will place them in a state of long-term storage to allow radiation inside to dissipate over a period of decades, until they can be dismantled and buried.

USA: House prepares to debate, vote after bolstering Biden’s bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House is preparing to debate and vote on a revised draft of President Joe Biden’s now-$1.85 trillion domestic policy package as well as a companion $1 trillion infrastructure bill, Democrats eager to show voters the party can deliver on its priorities.

With a flurry of late-breaking adjustments, Democrats added key provisions to what has grown to a sprawling 2,135-page package — adding back a new paid family leave program,work permits for immigrants and changes to state and local tax deductions.
