India: Not 70 lakh, but one lakh to attend Trump roadshow

Ahmedabad, Feb 20 (PTI) Nearly one lakh people are expected to line up along the 22-km route of the roadshow of US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad on February 24, officials said on Thursday.

The number is much less than what the US president has been claiming.

In a recent video, Trump said, "7 million (70 lakh)" people will be there on the roadshow route.

Gandhinagar, Feb 15 (PTI) Supreme Court judge Justice DY Chandrachud on Saturday asked students of a law university here in Gujarat to develop the "courage to dissent" and be optimistic and true to their conscience.

Speaking at the convocation ceremony at the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Justice Chandrachud also asked the budding law professionals to learn to handle failures and do something good every day in life.

India: Bhagwat inaugurates new Gujarat RSS headquarter building

Ahmedabad, Feb 15 (PTI) Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat inaugurated the newly-constructed Gujarat headquarter building of the Sangh- Dr Hedgewar Bhavan- here on Saturday.

He inaugurated the five-storey building, located in Maninagar area, after offering flowers to a large painting of Bharat Mata installed at its main entrance.

India: School trustee held for raping 15-year-old student in Gujrat

Surendranagar, Feb 12 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by the trustee of a residential school in Gujarat's Surendranagar district, police said on Wednesday.

The police on Wednesday arrested Batukbhai Bhatti after the Class 10 student's mother lodged an FIR at Chotila police station, accusing him of raping her daughter, an official said.

India: Death warrant issued for convict in rape-and-murder case

Surat (Guj), Jan 30 (PTI) A court in Surat on Thursday issued death warrant for a 22-year-old man from Bihar, convicted for rape and murder of a three-year-old girl in the city in October 2018.

The warrant, issued by additional sessions judge P S Kala, fixed February 29 as the date for hanging Anil Yadav, the convict.

India: Guj urges Qatar to provide gas at reasonable rates

New Delhi, Jan 27 (PTI) Gujarat Energy Minister Saurabhbhai Patel on Monday urged Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Qatar, to supply gas to the state at reasonable rates on long-term basis, a press release from the state government said.

A bilateral meeting between Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Steel Dharmendra Pradhan and Al Kaabi was held here which was attended by Patel.

India: Hardik Patel released on bail

Ahmedabad, Jan 24 (PTI) After remaining in police custody for a week, Congress leader Hardik Patel was a free man on Friday as he was granted bail by two courts in different towns.

On Thursday, Patel walked out of Sabarmati Central Jail here after getting bail in a sedition case registered here in 2015.

But as soon as he came out, he was arrested by a police team from Mansa town in Gandhinagar in a 2017 case where he is accused of addressing a rally without police permission.

India: Hardik held in 2017 case as soon as he walks out of jail

Ahmedabad, Jan 23 (PTI) Congress leader Hardik Patel, who walked out of the Sabarmati Central Jail here on Thursday a day after he was granted bail in a sedition case, was immediately arrested by Gandhinagar district police in a 2017 case of addressing a rally without police permission, an official said.

A local court in Ahmedabad had on Wednesday granted bail to Patel, four days after he was arrested for failing to appear before the trial court in a 2015 sedition case.

India: HC rejects Sanjiv Bhatt's plea in drug planting case

Ahmedabad, Jan 22 (PTI) The Gujarat High Court has rejected a plea filed by former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt seeking a review of its direction to the CID to probe a 1996 case of alleged drug planting in which he was arrested.

Justice J B Pardiwala rejected the jailed former officer's petition last week.
