Swedish-Iranian scientist convicted of spying for Israel may face execution

02 Dec 2020; MEMO:  Swedish-Iranian scientist Ahmadreza Djalali, sentenced to death in Iran on espionage charges, may face imminent execution, rights groups said on Tuesday.

"On 1 December, a judge said Ahmadreza was to be transferred to Rajai Shahr prison TODAY to proceed with his imminent execution," Amnesty International said on Twitter.

Iran newspaper: Strike Haifa if Israel killed scientist

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — An opinion piece published Sunday by a hard-line Iranian newspaper urged Iran to attack the Israeli port city of Haifa if Israel carried out the killing of the scientist who founded the Islamic Republic’s military nuclear program in the early 2000s.

Though the hard-line Kayhan newspaper has long argued for aggressive retaliation for operations targeting Iran, Sunday’s opinion piece went further, suggesting any assault be carried out in a way that destroys facilities and “also causes heavy human casualties.”

COVID-19 kills 406 more Iranians over past 24 hours

TEHRAN, Nov 27 (NNN-IRNA) — Iran’s Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said on Friday that some 406 more Iranians have died from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) over the past 24 hours.

The health ministry spokeswoman said that with the 406 new deaths the country’s total COVID-19 death toll mounted to 47,095.

Some 14,051 new cases of infection with the COVID-19 were found over the past 24 hours, some 2,245 of whom have been hospitalized, Sadat Lari said.

Iran says U.S. sanctions affect battle against COVID-19

TEHRAN, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. anti-Iran sanctions have imposed adverse effects on the country's fight against COVID-19, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations said on Thursday.

"Iran is currently facing the toughest sanctions ever imposed on any country, and these limitations have severely hampered our efforts to combat the COVID-19," Majid Takht Ravanchi said, reported by semi-official Fars news agency.
