India: Man arrested for impregnating minor in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Jul 1 (PTI) Odisha Police on Monday arrested a person on charges of impregnating a minor of a girls' hostel run by the ST & SC Development Department of the state government.

The accused was arrested by personnel of the Mahila Police Station from Adivasi Gaon in Bhubaneswar, DCP Anup Sahoo said.

The man, who is a distant relative of the minor girl, allegedly raped her twice, when she had gone to the house of a relative at Salia Sahi area during the summer vacation.

India: Abducted girl rescued in Reasi, kidnapper arrested

Jammu, Jul 2 (PTI) A minor girl, allegedly abducted by a man, was rescued and her kidnapper arrested in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district, police said on Tuesday.

A resident of Kansi Patta in Reasi had Monday complained to the police that his daughter who had gone to attend summer classes on June 28 had not returned home, police said.

The complainant told the police that a person named Shankar Singh used to harass his daughter and he suspected him of abducting her, they added.

India: Demand in RS to regulate fake news, indecent language

New Delhi, Jul 2 (PTI) A demand to frame a law to regulate fake news and indecent language on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook was made in the Rajya Sabha Tuesday.

Raising the issue through a Zero Hour mention, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said communal riots and societal divide is being created by circulation of fake news on social media.

"Studies have shown that fake news is more dangerous than terrorism," he said.

India: Maha rain fury claims 27 lives

Mumbai, Jul 2 (PTI) Rain fury claimed 27 lives in Maharashtra, including 18 in a wall collapse in Mumbai, while the authorities declared a holiday in the city and adjoining regions, asking people to avoid stepping out of their houses.

Eighteen people were killed and over 50 injured in a wall collapse in the northern suburb of Malad in Mumbai early Tuesday following heavy rains.

Monsoon rain causes wall to collapse, killing 15 in India

MUMBAI, India (AP) — Heavy rainfall in the western India city of Mumbai caused a wall to collapse onto shanties, killing at least 15 people and injuring 66, police said Tuesday, as forecasters warned of more rains.

Multiple rescue teams with sniffer dogs were searching the area after the wall collapsed during the night, said Sunil Deshmukh, a police officer.

Three other deaths occurred elsewhere in Mumbai, and Deshmukh said more casualties were feared at the site of another wall collapse.

Work on desilting Pandu river to begin soon

Kanpur: To cleanse the much-talked Pandu river originating from Farrukhabad district in the state of Uttar Pradesh the irrigation department and the MNREGA have taken a joint responsibility of removal of the accumulated in the river that mingles with the flow of Ganga river near Chaudagra in Fatehpur district. 

Interesting point to note is that the river area will also be measured herewith so that notices to encroahers will be issued. 

India: GST may become two-tier tax with merger of 12, 18 pc slabs

New Delhi, Jul 1 (PTI) Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Monday said the 12 and 18 per cent tax slabs in goods and services tax (GST) could be merged going forward as revenues increase, thereby effectively making it a two-tier tax.

Penning a Facebook post on the second anniversary of GST rollout, Jaitley said as many as 20 states are already showing more than a 14 per cent increase in their revenues and do not require the centre to compensate them for revenue loss arising out of GST implementation.

India: Zaira Wasim announces 'disassociation' from films

Srinagar, Jun 30 (PTI) National Award-winning actor Zaira Wasim on Sunday announced her "disassociation" from the field of acting, saying she was not happy with the line of work as it interfered with her faith and religion.

In a detailed post on her Facebook page, which she later shared across all social media platforms, the Kashmiri-born "Dangal" fame star said she realised "though I may fit here perfectly, I do not belong here".

India: Man, his son held for raping and killing two sisters

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Jun 30 (PTI) A man and his son, who were absconding since 2014, were arrested for allegedly raping and killing two sisters in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh, police said Sunday.

Inam and his son Isar were hiding at a village in Ambala in Haryana and were arrested on Saturday, Circle Officer Rajesh Kumar Tiwari said.

The two were carrying rewards of Rs 20,000 each on their arrest, he said.

India: German woman goes missing in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuam, Jun 30 (PTI) A German woman, who had come here in March, has gone missing from here, police said Sunday.

The foreigner, in her 30s, is identified as Liza, they said.

A senior police source told PTI that they received a complaint in this regard last week and an investigation was on.

"Police have received a letter from the German Consulate that she is missing. A probe has begun. She came here in March," sources said.
