India: PMC Bank depositors continue protest seeking payback

Mumbai, Oct 30 (PTI) Depositors of the PMC Bank on Wednesday protested in the financial capital, seeking an immediate payback of their dues from the troubled cooperative.

The protest, which came a day after a similar agitation, also exposed cracks within the depositors, where two groups of leaders seem to have emerged.

The Wednesday's protest at the Azad Maidan, the designated protest ground in the financial capital saw the presence of Congress leader and the party's spokesperson Charan Singh Sapra.

India: Uzbek rape victim seeks arrest of accused police officer

Mumbai, Oct 30 (PTI) An Uzbek woman, who was allegedly raped by a police officer, met senior officials on Wednesday seeking action against the accused.

Alleging that the Chembur police were favouring the accused inspector Bhanudas Jadhav, the victim also demanded that the probe be handed over to the crime branch.

"The victim and her lawyer met Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) and others at the Police Commissioner Office in South Mumbai," an official said.

India: R K Mathur sworn-in as Ladakh LG

Leh, Oct 31 (PTI) Former bureaucrat Radha Krishna Mathur was sworn-in on Thursday as the first Lieutenant Governor of the strategically located Union Territory of Ladakh, which came into existence after the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir.

Mathur, who will turn 66 next month, was administered the oath of office by the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Gita Mittal, at a function held at the Sindhu Sanskriti auditorium here, which was attended by officials of the Leh and Kargil hill councils, Army and paramilitary forces, religious leaders and the general public.

India: Murmu sworn-in as lt governor of Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 31 (PTI) G C Murmu was on Thursday sworn in as the first lieutenant governor of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir following the bifurcation of the state into two union territories.

The oath of office to Murmu, who will turn 60 next month, was administered by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Justice Gita Mittal at a simple function held at Raj Bhawan at the foothills of the Zaberwan range.

The warrant of appointment of Murmu, a 1985 batch IAS officer from Gujarat, was read out by Chief Secretary B V R Subrahmanyam.

India: New government scheme targets personal gold without receipt

Delhi; 31 Oct 2019 (UMM): According to a new Government of India scheme, a fine will be imposed on gold above a fixed quantity without proper purchase receipts.

Though the details of the scheme are yet to be revealed, government claims that the scheme is to prevent black money in gold investment.

Security stepped up in Kashmir after attack leaves 5 migrant labourers dead

Srinagar, Oct 30; GANASHAKTI: Security has been heightened in Kashmir following the terror attack in Kulgam district that left five labourers from West Bengal dead, even as a complete shutdown disrupted normal life across the valley on Wednesday, officials said.

The terror attack came at a time when a delegation of parliamentarians from the European Union is in Kashmir to talk to locals and ask them about their experience after abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370 of the Constitution.

India: Chidambaram moves HC seeking interim bail

New Delhi, Oct 30 (PTI) Former Union minister P Chidambaram moved the Delhi High Court on Wednesday seeking interim bail in the INX Media money-laundering case on health grounds.

The application was mentioned before a bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar by senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who sought urgent listing of the matter.

The bench listed the matter before the appropriate court on Thursday.
