WELLINGTON, June 9 (Xinhua) -- New Zealanders from across the country are calling for the criminal justice system to be overhauled, the country's Justice Minister Andrew Little said on Sunday, citing a new report providing reform options for the government to build a safer and more effective justice system.

The newly released interim report by the Safe and Effective Justice Advisory Group captures feedbacks from New Zealanders on the current state of the justice system and offers insights on how it can be improved.

Australia police make record meth drug bust

Street sealed off after gunshot heard in NZ Christchurch

WELLINGTON, June 7 (Xinhua) -- A street in the eastern suburbs of Christchurch was blocked off by the police after a gunshot was heard and reported.

Police arrived in the area early Friday morning after receiving a report saying a firearm was discharged on the street by a park in the suburb of Avonside, Senior Sergeant Paul Robertson said in a statement.

There were no reported injuries, Robertson said, adding investigations are underway.

AI robots could play big role in mental healthcare: Aussie study

SYDNEY, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Artificially intelligent (AI) robots that can speak with people autonomously have a big role to play in the future of mental healthcare, according to a team of Aussie experts on Thursday.

The researchers at the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision and the Queensland University of Technology believe social robots have enormous potential to help people suffering from conditions such as depression, drug and alcohol abuse, and eating disorders.

1 killed in shooting in New Zealand's North Island

WELLINGTON, June 6 (Xinhua) -- One person died following a firearm-involved incident near Kawhia, New Zealand's North Island, early Thursday.

Police were called to a rural address about 4:00 a.m. local time (1600 GMT Wednesday) on a shooting report, Detective Inspector Graham Pitkethley said in a statement.

Initial indications showed the incident was caused by a firearm.

Three others were also wounded in the incident and were reported to be in a moderate condition, Pitkethley said, adding that one person was assisting police with their enquiries.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Lawyers for the most senior Roman Catholic found guilty of child sex abuse argued in his appeal on Wednesday that he could not have molested two choirboys in an Australian cathedral undetected moments after Sunday Masses while he was dressed in an archbishop’s robes.

Cardinal George Pell, 77, wore a black suit and black shirt with a cleric’s collar when he appeared for the Victoria state Court of Appeal hearing before three judges. He came and went from the court as the sole occupant of a prison van. He said nothing during the hearing.

Hackers steal student data from Australia's top university

4 June 2019; DW: Attackers breached the computer systems of the Australian National University (ANU) to gain access to student data going back 19 years, ANU officials said on Tuesday. The data includes bank accounts, phone numbers, addresses, passport and tax file numbers, and academic records.

The attack was committed by "a sophisticated operator," according to ANU vice-chancellor Brian Schmidt. He said he breach happened in late 2018 but was only discovered two weeks ago.

NASA to launch rockets from northern Australia spaceport in 2020

CANBERRA, June 1 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has chosen northern Australia for its first-ever launch from a privately-owned site.

The U.S. space agency on Friday night announced it will work with the Equatorial Launch Australia (ELA) to launch four rockets from the Arnhem Space Center in Northern Territory, 700 km east of Darwin, in 2020.
