AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A U.S. Army sergeant convicted of murder in the shooting death of an armed protester in a Black Lives Matter march in Texas faces up to life in prison when his sentencing hearing begins Tuesday, even as Gov. Greg Abbott presses for the chance to pardon the soldier.

Sentencing for Daniel Perry is scheduled to last up to two days. State District Judge Clifford Brown, who presided over Perry’s trial, last week denied his request for a new trial.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s town hall forum on CNN on Wednesday is the first major television event of the 2024 presidential campaign — and a gigantic test for the chosen moderator, Kaitlan Collins.

Both sides of the political divide expressed suspicion when the CNN forum at New Hampshire’s St. Anselm College was announced last week. Some Democrats question whether the former president should be given the airtime, while Republicans wonder if a network Trump has long disparaged can be fair.

09 May 2023; AA: A driver who plowed an SUV into a group of migrants at a bus stop in South Texas, killing eight people, has been charged with manslaughter, authorities announced Monday. 

George Alvarez, 34, faces eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following Sunday's incident, which left eight people dead and at least 10 others wounded, according to multiple news outlets.

Over the past 72 hours, 26,382 people have been detained while 7,399 others eluded law enforcement, said US Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz Ruiz. Hundreds of pounds of drugs, mostly marijuana, were also seized at the border.

WASHINGTON, May 8 (NNN-XINHUA) – Three consecutive shootings happened on Friday and Saturday, in the United States, have killed at least 11 people and injured dozens.

In a shooting at a Texas outlet mall on Saturday afternoon, at least nine people were killed and seven others injured.

The shooter, who, authorities believe was acting alone, was dead at the scene, according to the Collin County Sheriff’s Office.

WASHINGTON, May 8 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday said his administration is writing new rules that will require airlines to compensate passengers with cash for significant flight delays or cancellations when the carriers are responsible.

"Our top priority has been to get American air travelers a better deal," Biden said.

It is the latest in a series of moves by the Biden administration to crack down on airlines and bolster passenger consumer protections for domestic U.S. flights and international flights involving an American destination or origin.
