Morocco FM reiterates call on Algeria to join dialogue on Sahara region

07 Apr 2021; MEMO: The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, has reiterated his country's call on Algeria to sit at the negotiating table over the Western Sahara region.

Bourita made the remarks during a joint press conference with his Senegalese counterpart, Aïssata Tall Sall, on the occasion of opening a consulate general for Senegal in Dakhla.

Tunisian president rejects parliament bid to amend approval of Constitutional Court

07 Apr 2021; MEMO: Tunisia's President Kais Saied said on Tuesday that he had rejected parliament's attempt to reduce the number of votes needed to approve the formation of a constitutional court, Anadolu reported.

Saied claimed that such amendments were merely introduced in a bid to settle scores, while Al Sharq Al Awsat newspaper said that Saied was afraid that the new amendments were targeting him and give the parliament more power to be able to oust the president.

Israel, Morocco sign deals to bolster bilateral ties

03 Apr 2021; MEMO: Israeli and Moroccan institutions signed yesterday two agreements to increase cooperation in the fields of economy and education, the head of Israel's diplomatic mission in Morocco said, Anadolu Agency reports.

The first agreement was signed between General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), the largest corporate group in Morocco, and one of the Israel's top technology companies IBEO, David Govrin said on Twitter.

Morocco secretly received weapons from Israel years before normalisation

20 Mar 2021; MEMO: A Hebrew newspaper shed light on "secret military relations" between Morocco and Israel, which started many years before signing the normalisation agreement in December 2020.

Researcher Jonathan Hempel, a specialist in Israeli military and security export, disclosed in an article published by Haaretz that Israeli military exports were covertly delivered to Morocco.

Morocco urges Libyans to accelerate gov't formation

RABAT, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Morocco on Friday urged Libyan political parties to accelerate the formation of a new government to lead Libya during the transition phase.

"The establishment of a new government will clarify the vision on the Libyan political path," Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita told the press after his meeting in capital Rabat with visiting Speaker of the Libyan eastern-based House of Representatives Aguila Saleh.

Rabat denounces Spain's police brutality against Morocco minors

05 Feb 2021; MEMO: The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday summoned Spain's ambassador to Rabat to protest the Spanish police aggression against Moroccan minors in an immigration detention centre.

This came after Spanish media published a video last Sunday showing Spanish security officers aggressing Moroccan adolescents in an immigration detention centre in the Spanish Canary Islands.

Morocco: unemployment hit 11.9% in 2020

04 Feb 2021; MEMO: The unemployment rate in Morocco rose to 11.9 per cent of the working population last year, compared with 9.2 per cent in 2019.

In a report issued yesterday, Morocco's High Commission for Planning (HCP), the country's official national statistics office, attributed the surge in unemployment to the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and the drought affecting agriculture.
