World Bank says Kenya's economy could face setbacks without climate action

NAIROBI, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's economy could face setbacks without climate actions designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adjustments to the effects of climate change, the World Bank said in a report released Friday.

According to the Kenya Country Climate and Development Report, inaction against climate change could result in a decline of 3.61 percent to 7.25 percent in real gross domestic product (GDP) relative to the business-as-usual baseline scenario by the year 2050.

UNEP says net-zero targets at stake amid soaring fossil fuel production

NAIROBI, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- The production of fossil fuels including coal, oil and gas is expected to soar this decade, hence undermining efforts to tame the escalating climate emergencies globally, according to a joint report by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and research partners launched on Wednesday.

According to the 2023 Production Gap Report, world governments plan to produce 110 percent more fossil fuels in 2030, a move that will place hurdles in efforts to limit atmospheric warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Czech Prime Minister arrives in Kenya for State visit

NAIROBI, Nov 6 (NNN-KBC) — Czech Republic Prime Minister Petr Fiala is in Kenya for a three-day official visit.

Fiala jetted into Kenya Sunday night and was received at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia  Mudavadi.

The Czech Premier will hold discussions with senior government officials and industry leaders ahead of his official reception at Statehouse, Nairobi by President William Ruto on Tuesday.

Kenyan opposition lawmakers say the Haiti peacekeeping mission must be approved by parliament

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Kenyan lawmakers said Wednesday that parliamentary approval is required before the deployment of police to the Kenya-led peacekeeping mission in Haiti to combat gang violence that was approved by the U.N. Security Council this week.

Opposition lawmaker Anthony Oluoch told a session of Parliament’s lower house that the conditions for foreign deployment hadn’t been met under the National Police Act.

Kenya's coffee production to remain steady in 2023

NAIROBI, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's coffee production is projected to hit approximately 51,000 metric tons in 2023, which is similar compared to the data achieved in 2022 as the area under cultivation has remained the same, according to a government official.

Benson Apuoyo, acting director of the Coffee Directorate at the Agriculture and Food Authority, said Tuesday in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, that the area under the crop remains stable at 108,000 hectares.

A Kenyan military helicopter has crashed near Somalia, and sources say all 8 on board have died

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A military helicopter crash in Kenya near the border with Somalia has killed at least eight people, officials said Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash in the county of Lamu in coastal Kenya. Kenyan defense forces operate in the area to help deter al-Qaida-linked extremists from the al-Shahab group, based across the border in Somalia.

The Department of Defense said the Air Force helicopter crashed while on night patrol. It said a board of inquiry has been sent to the scene.
