AU says Africa faces "exponentially increasing" climate-induced disasters

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Climate-related disasters have increased exponentially in Africa over the past two decades, hampering Africa's overall socioeconomic development, the African Union (AU) said on Wednesday.

"Despite improvements, the economic and social growth achieved so far in Africa is very fragile and susceptible to climate risks and disasters hence negating the progress made towards achievement of national goals and overall attainment of Agenda 2063 and the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," the AU said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Oslo, Dec 10 (AFP/PTI) Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed will collect his Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo Tuesday, but as ethnic violence rises at home he has kept festivities to a minimum and refused media requests.

Hailed as a modern, reformist leader, Ahmed's decision to skip all events with the press has dismayed his Norwegian hosts.

Africa's youngest leader at just 43, he is to receive the prestigious award at a ceremony in Oslo's City Hall at 1:00 pm (1200 GMT), attended by the royal family and Norwegian public figures.

Ethiopia to establish naval base in Djibouti

05 Dec 2019; MEMO: Ethiopian newspapers revealed that the country’s military will establish a base on the Red Sea’s coasts.

Citing naval sources, local media outlets reported that Ethiopian authorities are preparing to start building a naval base on the coasts of Djibouti, by the Strait of Eden.

The naval base’s command will be located in Bahir Dar, capital of the Amhara region, to the northeast of Ethiopia. It is reportedly set to be led by Kendo Gizo as commander.

Last remains of Ethiopian plane crash victims buried, families say little notice given

ADDIS ABABA/CHICAGO (Reuters) - The last remains of 157 people killed aboard an Ethiopian Airlines plane in March were interred at the crash site this week, farmers and families told Reuters, but some relatives were upset they had been unable to take part in the ceremony.

Nadia Milleron, whose daughter Samya Stumo was killed, said an email was sent to some families — but not all — notifying them of the burial just two days before it happened.

Ethiopia PM Abiy warns ethnic violence could worsen

27 October 2019; AFP: Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed warned Saturday of further instability and vowed to bring to justice those responsible for violence that left at least 67 people dead this week.

"The crisis we have faced will become even more fearsome and difficult if Ethiopians don't unite and stand as one," Abiy said in a statement issued by his office, his first remarks since the violence broke out.

25 October 2019; AFP: At least 16 people have been killed in violence in Ethiopia this week that began with protests against Prime Minister and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Abiy Ahmed, an Amnesty International researcher said Friday.

"Up to now we have confirmed 16 people dead, but the number must be more than that because new reports are emerging which we have not confirmed," Fisseha Tekle told AFP.
