Bangladesh halts visas for Pakistani nationals amid diplomatic impasse

Dhaka/Islamabad, May 21 (PTI) Bangladesh high commission in Islamabad has stopped issuing visas to Pakistani nationals for one week over a fresh diplomatic row, a Bangladeshi official said Tuesday, amid strained bilateral ties since 2013 when Dhaka decided to hang several of the 1971 war criminals.

The diplomatic row between Bangladesh and Pakistan is on the rise since last year when Dhaka denied a visa to the Pakistan high commissioner.

Bangladesh-China Silk Road Forum launched in Bangladesh

DHAKA, May 19 (Xinhua): Bangladesh and China have launched a new platform, the Bangladesh-China Silk Road Forum, in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, focusing on lasting links under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) between the two countries for mutual benefit.

The event was attended by political leadership, high-ranking officials from the private and public sector, community representatives and the members of the business sector and media.

Chinese firm signs contract for road improvement with Bangladesh

DHAKA, April 4 (Xinhua) -- A state-owned Chinese company on Thursday signed an agreement for improvement of Elenga-Hatikamrul-Rangpur Road to a 4-Lane highway in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

China Construction Seventh Engineering Division Corporation Limited, a subsidiary of China State Construction Engineering Corporation Limited, signed the official contract with the Bangladeshi government's Roads and Highways Department here.

Fire guts some 300 shops at Bangladesh capital Dhaka's market

DHAKA, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A fire gutted some 300 shops in a kitchen market located at Bangladesh capital Dhaka's Gulshan on Saturday, destroying goods and property, said a firefighter.

The firefighter who preferred to be unnamed said the fire, which originated at around 6:00 a.m. local time, raged on till 8:00 a.m. local time.

He said 21 units of firefighters have been trying to douse the fire.

No casualties have so far been reported.

The exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.

Criminal case to be filed in Bangladesh fire that killed 25

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — A Bangladeshi housing official said Friday criminal charges would be filed against the owner of a building where a fire killed 25 people and which had four upper floors constructed illegally.

Minister for Housing and Public Work S.M. Rezaul Karim also pledged to take action against officials in his ministry if they were guilty of wrongdoing associated with allowing the added floors or other violations.

Turkey: Majority stake in Singer Bangladesh for Arcelik

Dhaka, 25 Mar 2019; AA: Turkish appliance giant Arcelik has signed an agreement to acquire a majority stake in Singer Bangladesh for $75 million, an official announcement said on Sunday.

Under the agreement, Ardutch BV, a wholly owned subsidiary of Arcelik, would acquire a 57 percent stake in Singer Bangladesh's majority shareholder Retail Holdings Bhold BV.

Bangladesh: Awami League leader shot dead

Dhaka, Mar 19; PTI/GANASHAKTI:  Unidentified assailants gunned down a local leader of the ruling Awami League in front of his family in the southeastern Bangladesh on Tuesday, a day after seven election and security officials were shot dead while returning from a remote polling centre

Suresh Kanti Tanchangya, Bilaichhari upazila president of the Awami League, was gunned down around 9:30 am in Alikhong area in Rangamati district, police said

He, along with his family, was coming to Bilaichhari on boat this morning, they said.

World Bank approves 185 mln USD for Bangladesh renewable energy project

DHAKA, March 2 (Xinhua) -- The World Bank has approved 185 million U.S. dollars to add up to 310 Megawatt (MW) in renewable energy generation capacity in Bangladesh and mobilize private sector participation to meet the growing demand for electricity in the country.

According to a statement of the Washington-based lender received here Saturday, the "Scaling-up Renewable Energy Project" will increase installed capacity of renewables through piloting and expanding investments in key market segments.

Bangladesh tells UN it will no longer take in Myanmar refugees

01 Mar 2019; AFP: Bangladesh told the UN Security Council on Thursday that it will no longer be able to take in refugees from Myanmar.

Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque told a council meeting that the crisis over the repatriation of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya sheltering in his country had gone from "bad to worse" and urged the council to take "decisive" action.
