At least seven killed in gas explosion in Bangladesh

DHAKA (Reuters) - At least seven people were killed and eight injured on Sunday after a gas pipeline exploded in the Bangladeshi port city of Chittagong, a police official said.

The pipeline exploded in front of a five-story building, blowing some of the building’s walls off, Mohammad Mohsin said, citing witnesses.

The injured were taken to hospital, he said, adding the death toll could rise as some were in critical condition.

Among the injured, one suffered burns while others were wounded by the wall collapse, Mohsin said.

15 die in Bangladesh train accident

Dhaka, Nov 12 (PTI) At least 15 people were killed and over 50 others injured in a head-on collision between two trains in Brahmanbaria district in east-central Bangladesh on Tuesday, according to media reports.

Chittagong-bound Udayan Express from Sylhet and Dhaka-bound Turna Nishita collided near Mondobhag Railway Station in the district around 3:30am on Tuesday, Hayat-ud-Dowla Khan, Brahmanbaria Deputy Commissioner was quoted as saying by the Dhaka Tribune.

Khan said that the accident occured because the loco masters did not obey the signals.

Bangladesh head-on train crash leaves 12 dead, 28 injured: police

DHAKA, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people were killed and 28 others injured in a collision between two passenger trains in Bangladesh's Brahmanbaria district, some 109 km northeast of capital Dhaka, police said.

The accident happened at about 2:00 a.m. local time Tuesday (2000 GMT Monday).

The district's police chief Mohammad Anisur Rahman confirmed the deaths in the accident and feared the figure will rise as several of the injured are in critical condition. He said the rescue operation is underway.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.

Six dead, 36 fishermen missing after cyclone Bulbul lashes Bangladesh

DHAKA (Reuters) - Cyclone Bulbul lashed Bangladesh overnight, killing six people and leaving relatives in a desperate search for 36 missing fishermen, though prompt evacuations saved many lives and the worst was over, officials said on Sunday.

Some 30 people were injured and around 6,000 homes were partially or fully damaged, authorities said.

Bangladesh orders massive evacuation for Cyclone Bulbul

Dhaka, Nov 9 (PTI) Authorities in Bangladesh on Friday ordered the evacuation of about 18 lakh people from the low-lying coastal villages and islands as the country braced for a "very severe" cyclonic storm that is set to hit the country this evening.

Officials from the disaster management ministry said thousands of people have already been moved to safe shelters as the evacuation process was underway particularly in 10 southwestern coastal districts, which are likely to face the maximum brunt of Cyclone 'Bulbul'.

Bangladesh Nobel Laureate Granted Bail By Court

DHAKA, Nov 4 (NNN-BSS) – A court in Bangladesh’s capital, gave bail to Nobel laureate, Muhammad Yunus, on Sunday afternoon, over the firing of his three employees.

Dhaka 3rd Labour Court acting Chairman, Zakia Parveen, granted the order when Yunus, chairman of Grameen Communications, appeared before the court. He was given bail in connection with three cases filed over the sacking of three employees.

Bangladesh: Sixteen sentenced to death after teen burnt alive

Feni (Bangladesh), Oct 24 (AFP) A court in Bangladesh sentenced 16 people to death on Thursday over the murder of a 19-year-old female student burnt alive in April that provoked outrage across the country.

Nusrat Jahan Rafi was doused in kerosene and set on fire after refusing to withdraw a sexual harassment complaint against the head teacher of the seminary she attended.

"The verdict proves that nobody will get away with murder in Bangladesh. We have the rule of law," prosecutor Hafez Ahmed told reporters after the verdict in a crowded courtroom.

Bangladesh urges India to lift onion export ban

Guwahati, Oct 22 (PTI) Bangladesh on Tuesday urged India to lift ban on onion export to the neighbouring country at the earliest as prices of the commodity have skyrocketed there due to drop in supply.
